Interlocking pavers can last 50 years or more, but you’ll need to keep up with some basic routine maintenance to get the most out of them. Gravel driveways are the most economical driveway material, followed pretty closely by asphalt and concrete. At about $1 to $3 per square foot, gravel is about a third of the cost of either of the more common alternatives. But, not everyone likes the look and feel of the material and may opt to pay more for something that looks better.

You can put pavers over concrete following a similar procedure as above, but there are a few additional risks you need to be aware of—like stability, drainage, and the patio’s thickness. Once you lay a paver patio over concrete, it will be nearly impossible to treat any issues that your concrete may face, like cracks or water pooling. So while you may save some time and money on concrete removal and site prep, it may cost you more in the long run.

Adhere pavers to concrete with either mortar or a concrete-specific adhesive. In most cases, you will also need to lay a permeable sand layer below the pavers to encourage proper stability and drainage in your transformed patio, porch, or driveway. To lay pavers like a pro, always make sure you take the proper preparatory steps before adhering them directly to the concrete.
