Upholstery Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Similarly to cleaning a mattress, another common question is whether you can clean a couch with a carpet cleaner. Yes, you can use a carpet cleaner to clean a couch, especially if it comes with an upholstery attachment and you're using the right cleaning solution. Just like with mattresses, it’s important to avoid oversaturating the fabric and to use products that are safe for upholstery. Always check the care tag on your couch and spot-test a hidden area before deep cleaning to avoid discoloration or damage.

To remove dog or cat urine from a microfiber couch, use a safe solution for your furniture based on its cleaning code. First, blot up as much as possible, then cover the area with baking soda for a few hours to remove the smell. For S cleaning codes, use a spray bottle to spritz the stained area with rubbing alcohol and gently scrub with a microfiber cloth until the urine is gone. Use the same process for W or S-W cleaning codes but with 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of rubbing alcohol. 

Vinegar is acidic and makes a great cleaning agent for many items throughout the house, including some upholstery. It should not be used for any upholstery with the code S or X. It can be used for W labels. To use a vinegar solution, mix equal parts water and vinegar and blot the stain using a gentle circular motion with a clean microfibre cloth and then allow to dry completely. As with any DIY solution, test a small and inconspicuous section first.

Depending on your type of carpet, a wet/dry vacuum is a great final step to removing blood stains, but it will only help after you’ve used another method to pull out the bulk of the stain. A good option is to use a wet cleaning method, then apply baking soda to the stain, and then follow that by vacuuming thoroughly. Remember that this vacuum type does not work on all carpet types. Wool can shrink with this method, so always check the cleaning instructions from your carpet’s manufacturer.

It might be possible to wash your couch upholstery, but we don’t recommend it. Couches labeled with a “W” or “W/S” on the tag might be okay to wash gently with a couch cleaner or a homemade couch cleaning solution, but you have to be very careful not to get the padding underneath wet, as it will deteriorate and potentially ruin your couch. You should hire a professional upholstery cleaner to guarantee a safe, deep clean for your favorite furniture items.
