"Powerlift came highly recommended from a colleague. However, our experience was much less than desirable. Steve came out and gave us a quote --he was very personable and polite. When the crews arrived and began their work, apparently there was some "extra" work that needed to be completed before they could continue. This extra work almost doubled the already extremely high price --from around $18K to $32K. We were told that the cracks in the bricks might not appear differently and that we would need to have them repaired but with the piers we should have no further issues. BTW -- the landscaping was a mess! Bushes were left unplanted and concrete piles were randomly distributed around our property --super messy! We did hire a mason to repair all of the cracks outside and a contractor made repairs in our sheetrock. Today, you cannot even tell that we spent 32K to get things fixed. We have cracks in our brick exterior and cracks in our sheetrock. Steve did come back (twice) and each time makes some excuse of what is happening but of course, it is not due to the work that they did. :( I am totally disappointed every single time I walk out of my front door. I would not recommend."

Unfortunately, that was far from the truth. Not only did they fail to correct the actual problem, but the piers they installed were done incorrectly and not even placed in the proper locations. It’s clear now that the work was rushed and not thoroughly planned or executed with the care it deserved. We’re now left with unresolved issues and the added burden of hiring another company to fix their mistakes. I would not recommend this company to anyone looking for reliable or professional foundation repair. Yes, bricks can crack over time. While spotting a crack (or several) might be nerve-wracking, cracked bricks aren’t always cause for concern. In fact, it’s normal to see a few small cracks as your foundation settles. However, if the cracks are getting wider or longer or you keep finding new ones, you should have a masonry professional inspect them right away. You should also contact a pro if you notice any large or vertical cracks in your bricks.

Mortar is a mixture of sand and cement that binds materials, such as bricks, stones, and concrete blocks, together. Think of it as the glue that fills in the gaps between bricks and stones, then seals them in place to prevent damage or deterioration. Mortar also helps spread the load across a wall or structure, keeping cracks and shifting at bay.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

Drilling into brick or mortar requires the use of a masonry drill bit. Masonry drill bits appear similar to standard drill bits except for the leading tip of the bit. The tip has a bulky carbide arrow-shaped end slightly larger than the rest of the bit shaft. Standard or high-speed drill bits designed for making holes in wood or metal don’t have the ruggedness or design shape you need to drill into brick. They may not go through the brick at all, and if they do, they’re more likely to overheat, crack, or dull before you finish drilling.

A chimney cleaning brick or log can help loosen creosote between professional chimney cleaning appointments. Although they can help keep your chimney cleaner, they are not a substitute for chimney sweeping and are not meant to be used regularly.
