You can fix a door frame without replacing the whole door by repairing the impacted areas with wood filler, patching, or replacing components. You’ll need to uninstall your door to repair the frame and then reinstall it once you’ve completed the repair. However, if your door frame has severe structural damage, it might be more economical and safe to replace the entire door.

You can convert a pre-hung door into a Dutch door, but it’s more of a pain. Pre-hung doors are already set in the frame with the hinges and everything aligned, so once you cut the slab in half, you’ll likely need to adjust the hinge placement and maybe even mess with the frame itself. It’s doable, but expect some trial and error because it’s not a straight-swap situation.

Most repairs take 2-6 hours, though extensive damage, such as frame realignment or security system integration, may take an entire day.

Very small adjustments can sometimes be made while the door is on its hinges. Be sure to stabilize the door with a doorstop before you begin. Planing the bottom of the door, around the hinges or latch, or planing a large surface should all be done once the door is removed.

First, check to make sure the doorstop isn’t blocking the door. To close the door, slide the doorstop as close to the hinge side of the rod as possible. If that doesn’t work, try moving the door bracket closer to the other side. Some brackets will have extra holes for this purpose, meaning you can slide the bracket over and reattach it without drilling new holes into the door. If you’re still having trouble, you may want to consult a local storm door installer.
