"After living in our house 25 years, last winter we finally had more insulation added to our attic, and had the air ducts sealed/wrapped. We should have had this done years ago. The house felt warmer immediately. We also asked how our front door could be weatherized. There was a half inch gap between the top of the door and the door frame that we could see daylight through. Turns out that the door was hanging a little crooked because the hinges had sprung a little. The hinges were replaced, and then the door hung centered in the frame, but then there was a slight gap around all three sides of the door (not the bottom). A three sided insulated "frame" about 1/2 inch thick was attached to the door frame, on the outdoor side. Now the door closes right up against it, and there are no more gaps or drafts. Everyone I met from Weatherization Experts was very professional, and they showed up at the agreed upon times. They were done in five or six hour. I don't have any complaints at all. I don't know if I got a good price or not. I've never had this kind of work done before. I bought a "deal" on Angie's List for 1000 square feet coverage, six inches deep, and then I paid more to add additional inches of insulation to the deal I'd already paid for, for insulating 350 additional square feet, for wrapping/sealing the ducts, and for the work on the front door. I paid about $2500 total, then I got a $500 rebate from OG&E. Net cost = $2000. I'm confident we'll save money on our utility bills, and earn that money back."

Small jobs welcome

"Very great company. They came out explained the benefits of theirs services. I was looking to have more insulation blown in. Had no idea they could suck out the old and seal my attic and blow in new. Got a quote from them and thought it would be much higher and out of my price range but wasn’t . I ended up going with the removal seal and new blow in. It’s going to be so nice not having to breathe that old insulation when I get in the attic. Very impressed with their process and left everything clean."

"My installer was very knowledgeable and professional. His team promptly installed the insulation and baffles, as I requested, and tried to clean up afterward. I was already sweeping the garage, so I declined. The cost was exactly as quoted. Would be nice if they made it an option to pay online. (Maybe thatâ s possible now.) There was an immediate improvement in the comfort in the home. I would highly recommend this company."

"Unique product making a dent in insulation market. Milex is shaped like packing peanuts so will not settle and compress like blown in insulation. Price was below some competitors we priced. Plus Texas owned company. Definitely happy with how much warmer our home feels."

"I would highly recommend Energy Efficient insulation. They are a family ran business with fantastic customer service open communication and just all around very good people. I had a unique job request in insulation a cargo van for a camper conversion and Brent was very helpful in walking me through the pros and cons of each option. The work performed was top notch, and I wouldnâ t hesitate to use them again for future insulation jobs and needs."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Insulating your home's exterior walls can realize up to a 20% reduction in your monthly energy bills. This means that regardless of how much the project costs, it can begin to pay you back immediately. Additionally, adding spray foam and other high-end materials can increase the selling value of the property.

The heat loss through a poorly insulated attic when you’re running your furnace or heat pump during cold weather can be as high as 25%. This means you could see significantly higher energy costs to make up for this heat loss. The cost of adding insulation to the attic may eventually pay for itself through lower energy bills. If you decide to add a radiant barrier too, the radiant barrier cost may also pay for itself over time.

Canned spray foam has an R-value of R-3.7 per inch. However, it’s not great for use as insulation. Also known as single-component spray foam, it doesn’t expand as much as two-part types that work for insulating the whole house. Save the canned foam for gaps around doors and windows.

Insulating windows with plastic works, but it can be time-consuming, and the end results can—and often do—end up lacking in aesthetics. Window film and caulking your windows to make sure there are no drafts are two options that increase the energy efficiency of your home in a low-cost way. Plastic can be a good strategy while you consider alternatives.

You don’t need to staple insulation, as your drywall and studs will hold it into place. But if you already have a staple gun and staples lying around, it can help keep the product in place and avoid any shifting. But, most experts agree it’s an unnecessary step.

If you’re adding a vapor barrier, you will need to staple that in place.
