Choosing the right paint involves selecting durable products that resist moisture and offer a finish suited to the kitchen environment. These finishes are often semi-gloss or satin for ease of cleaning.

Pre-painting prep includes cleaning, sanding, and priming the surfaces to ensure paint adhesion and longevity.

If you want to spray paint your cabinets without sanding, you have a few options to rough up the kitchen cabinet surface before priming. First, you can try using mineral spirits and a rough sponge on the cabinet surface to give it some grit for the primer. The second option is to use liquid sandpaper on the cabinet surface so it deglosses the finish and will be ready for primer.

Liquid sandpaper is a solvent used to soften existing layers of paint and make them porous enough that you can effectively apply a new coat of paint. You rub the liquid sandpaper on, wait for it to work, and wipe it off—no literal sanding is involved. Liquid sandpaper can save time and is helpful if parts of the cabinet are hard to reach with standard sandpaper. However, like paint stripper, liquid sandpaper creates dangerous fumes and must be used with care indoors. And unlike sanding, it can’t fix any scratches or dings in your cabinets.
