Over time, too much air in your water lines can create blockages in your pipes, cause insufficient water flow to your taps and appliances, loosen pipes, and potentially damage important components of your well including your well pump and pressure tank. 

You can replace a spigot handle by unscrewing it from the outdoor faucet. Take the broken handle to a hardware or home improvement store. Ask for a new handle that matches the size of your existing one. Screw the new handle into the place and test the new handle to ensure it works and doesn’t cause any leaks. 

While PEX can't melt, high temperatures can alter its performance. The maximum heat that PEX can safely be exposed to is 180 degrees Fahrenheit. When PEX is exposed to high temperatures for extended periods of time, it may fail. While copper can withstand hot temperatures better than PEX, copper pipes freeze more easily compared to PEX.

It is safe to use a frost-proof or freeze-proof spigot or pump in the winter if you live in an area with freezing temperatures. Otherwise, it's best to fully drain and shut down your outside spigot in the winter to avoid cracking a pipe.

Though frost-free faucets are designed to withstand winter weather in most climates, it’s still a good idea to cover your faucets with an insulated cap during periods of extreme cold. Even then, you should always disconnect hoses and drain the faucet before temperatures dip below freezing. Frost-free faucets will not work correctly if a hose is attached because the hose can contain trapped water.
