Windows were installed well with minimal damage to surrounding finishes and installers left the areas as clean as they could. Very disappointed the windows were NOT cleaned before the installers left. A small gesture like that would have been very appreciated."

I have been doing handyman work since 2008. I am a 2017 winner of Angie’s List Super Service Award and have had my license as an Industrial Maintenance Technician since 2010. I am the sole employee, who occasionally uses subcontractors, with member’s approval. I am a jack of all trades and can perform most jobs around the house. Some of my handyman services include but are not limited to: flooring repairs and installs, interior and exterior painting, fencing, tree services, carpentry work, lawn and yard work, ceiling fan and fixture installations, appliance repairs, TV wall mounts, ceramic tile, and roof repairs. I am not a licensed contractor, but I can repair and/or replace existing electrical and plumbing needs. In many areas, a permit is required to remove stucco siding, especially if structural repairs or new siding installation are involved. Check with your local building department for specific requirements and associated permit fees before starting your project. Permit fees range from $100 to $500.

Stucco repair can best be described as a patch. It involves identifying the problem and fixing that specific damage with additional stucco. If no mold infiltration or an underlying leak is causing the damage, repair is most likely all you need. 

Remediation, on the other hand, involves removing the existing siding, fixing the underlying cause of the damage, and then reapplying stucco siding for that wall. It’s a more permanent fix that takes longer to complete and, hence, comes with a steeper price tag than repair.

Installing stucco over brick can add longevity and durability to your siding while protecting it from deterioration due to exposure to the elements. However, stucco over brick does have a few downsides. You’ll spend more time and money on maintenance and repairs, and your siding may be more susceptible to cracking.

Stucco is considered a type of cladding because it includes a built-in ventilation layer, a weatherproof membrane beneath that, and, often, a layer of insulation to improve building efficiency. The multiple layers of stucco—the scratch coat, the brown coat, and the finish coat—also create a more complex building membrane, so it’s more accurate to call it cladding. However, homeowners and contractors alike refer to stucco as siding.

The easiest way to remove stucco is to use a circular saw with a diamond blade to cut small squares out, pry them off, and then cut the metal lath behind it with tin snips. It’s possible to do everything with a hammer and a crowbar, but it will take significantly longer and will wear you out more quickly. Plus, you’ll have a higher risk of damaging windows, hidden siding, and sheathing if you go the less precise route.
