"They removed and filled a 2800 gallon pond., installed dirt and covered the area with river rock. They built flower beds including one that was 3 tiered and made them ready for planting. The crew and Kirk are easy to work with and they clean up after each work day. They have a great eye for aesthetics and made things better than I anticipated. I highly recommend Midwest Retaining Walls and would hire them again."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Start by inspecting your foundation and basement mortar. Bartlesville has expansive clay soils that shift and cause mortar joint cracking over time. You should also assess your chimney for repointing, as older homes here often show freeze-thaw damage. Finally, check your retaining walls and drainage systems. Proper drainage keeps heavy spring rain away from your masonry work, protecting your home from serious structural damage.

Helpful?

Watch out for local professionals who ignore soil conditions in their assessment. A reputable contractor will always address how OK clay soils affect your foundation. Avoid quotes that skip local building permits or ignore drainage improvements. Contractors must also specify materials rated for local freeze-thaw cycles. If a professional cannot explain their mortar mix or lacks an active state license, hire someone else for your masonry work.

Helpful?

Proper soil preparation and drainage design are the most critical factors for successful masonry work in Bartlesville. Installers must place footings below the 18-to-24-inch frost line to combat expansive clay soil movement. Contractors must also select flexible mortar types that withstand local freeze-thaw cycles. Finally, scheduling your installation during mild spring or fall weather prevents extreme temperatures from ruining the curing process and weakening your structure.

Helpful?

Keep crack monitors on hand to track shifting in your mortar joints, which happens frequently in Bartlesville due to seasonal soil movement. You also need masonry-appropriate sealant rated for freeze-thaw cycles and caulking tools for control joints. For minor masonry work between professional visits, stock tuck-pointing tools and pre-mixed mortar. Finally, keep drainage clearing tools available to unblock weep holes before heavy spring rains arrive.

Helpful?

You must inspect your mortar joints every fall before freeze-thaw cycles begin. Check your masonry work again in the spring for new cracking or spalling caused by winter ice. After severe OK storms, inspect your walls and chimneys for high-wind or hail damage. Keep your weep holes clear of debris year-round to manage heavy rainfall, and monitor your brick veneer for stair-step cracking caused by shifting clay soil.
