"Amanda was really very good!  At first I was very skeptical, thinking why did I pay money to just speak with someone on the phone about my kitchen remodel project... but after just a few minutes of her addressing some of the issues/questions I emailed to her earlier, I knew it was worth it.  It was very clear that she knew her business and she gave me several ideas that I had not even thought about.  I told her that I would definitely recommend her to friends and I will very likely use her again myself for my next home project!

"Our basement was wholly outdated and had all kinds of problems (electrical, plumbing, heating, walls, etc.) Chad listened to our vision and gave us many options to reach our goals. In the end, we completely remodeled the basement and turned it into a two bedroom, one bath apartment with a gorgeous kitchen, living room and bathroom. The transformation from entirely screwed-up to altogether modern in such a short period of time was amazing. We should?ve filmed the process and put it on one of those home remodeling shows! After seeing them deal with all of the problems that our basement had, I don?t think there?s anything that Turnkey Home Remodeling can?t fix. I definitely recommend them for any kind of home improvement or repairs."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Basements with persistent moisture problems or flooding shouldn’t be finished until the moisture issues have been fixed. In addition, if your foundation is cracked, you have unmitigated radon levels, or you have asbestos or lead pipes, remediate the underlying problem before finishing your basement. Turning a basement into living space before fixing these issues can lead to serious health risks or structural damage.

When considering finishing your basement, take into account a few pros and cons:

Pros

  • Can increase the value of your home

  • Separate space from the rest of the house

  • Customize and personalize the basement to suit your needs and style

  • Increase the amount of living space in your home

Cons

  • May not regain enough value to cover the cost of finishing

  • Lack of natural light if it’s below ground level

  • Moisture or flooding can cause costly damage

  • Installing plumbing and electrical can be messy and costly

Any bowing in a basement wall indicates a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional. If your basement wall bows more than 1 inch, it's time for an inspection. Generally, a wall can bow up to 30% of its thickness (around 2.5 inches for an 8-inch-thick wall) before it becomes an urgent situation. Bowing of 2 to 4 inches is more straightforward to fix than bowing of more than 4 inches, which will require significant repairs. If the bowing is more than 6 inches, the wall will likely need to be replaced. The sooner you address the problem, the easier and less expensive the repair will be.

Although it’s not required, air ventilation in a finished basement can help improve the air quality, prevent moisture and mold issues, keep musty odors away, and also maintain the air quality throughout the rest of your home. Proper ventilation will help maintain the value of your investment in finishing your basement. Try basement ventilation methods like installing vents or a dehumidifier for best results.

It is generally more affordable to finish a basement than an attic, though it ultimately depends on how you plan to use the space. The average cost to finish a basement ranges from $7 to $23 per square foot, while attic renovation costs $30 to $60 per square foot. However, a simple attic conversion to a storage space will cost significantly less.
