Jones Topsoil was incorporated in 1924 under the name Jones Fuel Co. 2015 is our 91st anniversary. We sold residential coal for home furnaces in the Columbus, Ohio area. As natural gas became the fuel of choice in the 1950’s we began hauling topsoil, sand and gravel, and limestone for contractors and homeowners. Although our corporate name is still Jones Fuel Co., we do not sell any fuel. Our topsoil has always been of the highest quality because we normally strip topsoil ahead of gravel operations. Our soil is called “sandy loam” topsoil and usually comes from along Franklin County Rivers and streams. We sell three types of topsoil. SoilPlus, which is a blended topsoil, and can be delivered with our Slinger Jones trucks, is normally used for flower beds and gardens. Pulverized topsoil is our rich topsoil run through a large grinder and made easy to work with and spread. That soil is used to level out lawns and fill areas that need built up with soil. Our regular, un-pulverized topsoil is used to fill deep holes, or when the customer is using a skid loader to spread the topsoil. "It is with a very heavy heart that I share this as I have shopped at Oakland Nursery for over 10 years and used various services including over $20K of work. Last year, I hired them for irrigation and sprinklers. The manager of irrigation left last fall for Colorado in the middle of my job. He had hired a sub to do it and I have had so many problems: left holes for kids to trip in, pummeled my fence, flooded my basement, planting grass in the wrong place, left a swamp. Although that sub is no longer there, they never hired another head of irrigation. They just used a guy that used to work for the previous head of irrigation (John). In order to solve the swamp issue, he sent a guy that wasn't a landscaper to dig up my sod and put dirt underneath. The previous head had recommended this in April but it wasn't done until months later, when the sun was too hot. It was a disaster and left a hazard as the grass was dying and pulling apart leaving large crevices. My daughter and I both twisted our ankles trying to get to the other side of the yard to water the veggies. They came and put hazard tape all around, ran my sprinklers around the clock and said no one could step on it for 4-6 weeks. I was left with almost half of my backyard that was unusable for a family reunion and two birthday parties. This was very costly to my family in the midst of COVID as we were planning to have these parties in the back yard. (They had also done 10K of work before this to plant a beautiful flower bed at the back of my yard that could no longer be seen because of the bright yellow hazard tape and tall weeds. They told me it couldn't even be mowed. I would have never consented to this if they told me it couldn't be walked on or mowed. When it was mowed 7 weeks later, there were holes, dead grass and a lot of bumps. They still haven't fixed this or even sent a boss to look at it. They send me bills with finance charges even though I paid before it was done. I already paid them $4100 for this service and they are charing me over $2K more b/c the head of irrigation did not put in writing what was a verbal agreement. There is no signed contract. I understand this is my fault but I trusted Oakland Nursery and John, the previous head of irrigation. This has been the worst professional experience of my life. I will no longer be using them and am hiring another company to fix it. I also have a lawyer who will now be communicating with them. My next email is to the Better Business bureau. I have never sued another company in my life, but sadly this is my next step if they continue to send me bills and don't correct the problems."

Pea gravel is the most common type of gravel, and it can be made of limestone, granite, basalt, sandstone, and many other types of rock. The strength in gravel comes from the distribution across the stones, so while one rock type may not be particularly strong (like sandstone), the matrix of small rocks that is gravel can become incredibly strong when installed correctly. 

Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. Over time, any decorative wood mulch will simply decompose under the topsoil.

The amount of soil you’ll need around your foundation depends on a variety of factors, but in general, you want a 6-inch decline over the first 10 feet extending out from your foundation. How much soil it will take to achieve that will depend on the current grade of the yard, how much foundation is exposed, and the size of your home.
