"The crew was respectful, and did an amazing job! Cleaned up after themselves every day. Completed the job in a timely manner and went above and beyond. Reasonable prices for the job as well! I would recommend them and I plan to call on them again for our kitchen remodel."

Universal Windows Direct was founded in April of 2002 by William Barr and Michael Strmac. It was their mission to create a home improvement company that offers high quality home improvement goods at the best possible value. What began as two guys in a 350 square foot office quickly grew to become one of the nation's leading remodeling companies. Today, Universal Windows Direct represents thousands of customers and has a rapidly growing network of locations nationwide, all of which are actively involved in the communities they serve.\n

"They were phenomenal, from Dan the owner to Bill the production manager and the most amazing crew of Ricky, Nathan and Nathan. Dan was gracious to gove me multiple quotes and answer numerous questions and he even stopped by my house on the last day of install to see how everything was going, he was just pure class and with NO high pressure sales tactics at all. Bill was great as well to explain how everything would go, how long it would take and gave us everything we asked for. But as great as these guys were the install crew was the best possible experience. Ricky, Nate and Nate were courteous and professional and cleaned up everything great. Ricky was just amazing and even joked with my kids a little about how the windows were installed. This is a top notch group who I will constantly sing their praises for many years to come and will only use them in the future for any window or door projects. If you are looking to have your windows replaced, you MUST USE ZEN WINDOWS, THEY ARE THE BEST!!! I almost forgot, the windows are absolutely awesome. We didnt want to cover them up, my wife even said she noticed a noise reduction the first day we had them in and she usually doesnt care about stuff like that. Amazing crew and Amazing product, I cant say enough."

"We were pleased with the installation of our fire/security system. The workers explained what they were going to do and showed us how to use the alarm. When they were done the installation, they cleaned up. They also gave us a discount because we went through Angie's List."

"Josh and his assistant came out in the bitter cold to replace the door and fix the water damage. The water damage was more extensive than we first thought, but they fixed it up nicely. They cleaned up the work area neatly. Both the front door and the storm door look and work great. Josh noticed a small issue with the storm door and will come back to fix it when the part comes in. I will definitely consider them if I need work in the future."

"Phenomenal. Absolutely Phenomenal. I hired the first company without checking on them completely and was taken for a ride. The first company (not Moving Ahead) tripled the quote when they arrived at my door saying I underestimated how much stuff would be moved even though I had rented the whole truck. I researched Moving Ahead and they checked out on the BBB and other sites, so I gave them a try. The workers were there before they said they would, they were courteous, hard working, and quick! All of my antiques were carefully packed up, boxes placed were I wanted them. The driver arrived from Ohio (same workers came to unpack so I knew them and they knew my stuff) within 36 hours. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend--I worked with Marton and he was amazing!!!!"

Doors questions, answered by experts

The strike plate, hinges, and handle are the parts of a door most prone to damage. These parts see the most frequent use, causing them to wear and twear faster than other parts of a door. If you’re experiencing door issues, check these three parts first to see if they need repairing or replacing.

If you want to let in plenty of sunlight while keeping your home well insulated, your best bet is a patio-style door with two doors with full-view windows, including one primary door and one secondary door behind it, such as a screen door or storm door. This two-door system will let in plenty of natural light while maximizing insulation.

An interior French door should last you anywhere between 30 and 50 years, while an exterior French door unit will last around 15 to 30 years on average. Exactly how long your French doors last depends on the quality of the materials you choose, with vinyl doors lasting far less time than fiberglass, metal, and clad-wood doors. Upgrading to shatterproof glass can also improve the lifespan of exterior French doors.

As long as you do it carefully, you can sand and restain hollow core doors. However, it’s risky because the veneers on hollow core doors are so thin that sanding and restaining might cause damage to the doors. If you do move forward with this project, sand the doors lightly with a medium-grit sandpaper.

Not every door can be converted into a pocket door. Pocket doors require specific hardware and a hollow space within the wall to slide into when open. The door must be sturdy enough to handle the sliding mechanism but not too heavy, as excessive weight can cause operation and track alignment issues. While some standard interior doors can be adapted for use as pocket doors with the right hardware, it's essential to ensure the door's compatibility and the structural feasibility of creating a pocket in the wall.
