"Started on 6/23/24 with the technician telling us we need a new unit, Told us that it was last years model so he was giving us a "deal" on it. He took a check that day for 1/2 of the cost of the unit. June 26th the unit was installed- after having to leave several times to buy a new torch set , and some other complications. June 29th we contacted the technician again about the unit not cooling appropriately, and that it was 80 & 78 on our Thermostats. June 30th - technician came back out and told us he needed a part. July 1st - part was delivered and technician came out to install. July 2nd we contacted the technician again letting him know it is not cooling. July 3rd - technician came out and looked at the system again, told us to give it until sat July 5th to see if it cools and then let him know July 5th we reached out to the technician to let him know the unit isnt cooling, technician communicated that they would be out Monday July 7th. July 7th - Technician came back out to look at the unit and it did start cooling July 8th - we contacted the technician to explain that there was ice on the pipe by our furnace, and that it was warming up in the house July 10th - technician comes out - does some type of adjustment with the thermostats July 20th - contacted the technician to let them know the AC unit outside was not turning on. July 21st Technician comes out and says a wire was loose on the unit outside thats why it wasnt working July 22nd we reach out to the technician and tell him there is ice building up on the unit outside July 23rd - Technician was going to come out, but we decided to get someone else to come look at the unit. - we let the technician know this. July 23rd - new company (had to pay service fee) comes out and states that the unit is too large for our house and has lots of pictures and reading that show what is wrong with this unit. They are sending some on July 24th to come give us an idea of what needs done to fix this unit, or (hopefully not) to replace it AGAIN."

Heating Oil questions, answered by experts

Most HVAC companies charge a flat service call fee of between $75 and $150, which includes traveling to your home and inspecting your system to find the underlying problem. Keep in mind that these prices only include diagnostics and the actual repairs will usually be billed separately. If you’re calling for routine service, the service call will be included in your inspection and tune-up, with the total sitting around $150. Your prices could be a little higher if you have a very large home with multiple condensers and air handlers, as inspections and servicing take longer.

HVAC systems usually last between 10 and 30 years, with most having a lifespan of around 20 years. Factors that impact a unit’s life expectancy include which brand you choose, how often you use it, and how well you maintain it. To make sure yours lasts as long as possible, make sure to keep it clean and schedule an annual service with an HVAC technician.

While it's generally safe to stay in a home with a coolant leak if your home is properly ventilated, it's important to have a professional come out to assess the situation right away. You should evacuate your home if you notice any powerful fumes. Additionally, you should leave your home if you are experiencing headaches or dizziness.

You can expect a geothermal system to last for years. According to the Department of Energy, the underground infrastructure for the heat pumps lasts about 25 to 50 years, which includes the pipes buried in the soil. The actual heat pump itself has a life span of around 25 years.
