Dethatching your lawn can also help the solid recover from overwatering and encourage healthy root and stalk health in your grass.

You can try that, but it isn't likely to yield results. It's like watering potted plants without putting the seeds in. Most of the tossed grass seeds sit on top of the soil or existing grass blades and never germinate. The seeds need to make it into the soil, just like growing a potted plant. The best way to accomplish this is to aerate your lawn first, then overseed.

If you have a healthy lawn, it’s not necessary to aerate it. However, lawn aeration comes with many benefits that can improve lawn health and help you save money on lawn care.

Aeration makes it easier for lawns to absorb water and key nutrients. It also encourages a strong root system and discourages weed growth. Lawn aeration and dethatching are meant to solve the same problem, loosening up compacted soil so that the root systems can grow and receive more water, oxygen, and nutrients. Aeration loosens the soil and only removes small cores of it.
