"We got 2 sliding glass doors installed by Ohio State Windows. It’s a great door and I was given an honest price. They were able to install quickly! I enjoyed Ernie and his team. If I ever need windows or doors again I know who I’m calling."

"Have worked with Jeremy and Larry at 1st Security for a few months now and they're great. They're far more responsive than any other alarm company I've worked with and they're focused on meeting your needs, versus endlessly trying to get you to buy more services and sensors that you might not need. In the house I just bought some other alarm company had installed a window open/close sensor on a window that doesn't open - probably fooling the prior senior citizen owners to pay more for more equipment they didn't need. I rest assured that 1st Security would never do something so foolish and greedy. They're good, honest people, and this is something that's unfortunately hard to find in the alarm business. I recommend them."

"1st project: They did not purchase garage doors with key locks (as I asked)and did not use proper rubber gasket on bottom of door so that there were no gaps. These garages were old and crooked. I hired someone else to finish the work. 2nd project: Removed door and repositioned on another wall where there was set of steps to outside. Installed door but did not do adjustment and repair on the stairs. because they were promised to another job. They left my job for few days and promised to return to finish the stairs and suggested I hold back some money until then.($500) However, when he returned he wanted $2500 more to make the exterior staircase "to code"!! He knew the circumstances of this job upon the original bid. There is not $2500 "extra" dollars in the budget. I asked that he put the window back but he wanted to charge me again to do that. Now I am left with a door to a dangerous side steps. Was this ethical? Also I had to call several times to remove the debris including wire screen used to surround the railing. He doubted it was his but I assured him it was original to the deck. That was in 2015/2016 and I do not know if his current circumstances and or if the employees have changed. However, this issue still remains and done with the owner."

"Our 30-year-old patio door had bad bearings and was leaking, so we called Classic Exteriors. The sales rep, Joel, showed up on time and patiently explained our options. He allowed my wife and me time to choose the right door for us and did not try to pressure us. We made our selection and scheduled an appointment about a month out (every contractor is busy in Ohio in summer). Russell, the installer, showed up on time and was polite and professional. Upon removing the old door, he found quite a bit of rotten wood where the old door had leaked rainwater, and discovered that the old door had been improperly supported at the bottom when the house was built. I had some pressure-treated 2x6 lumber on hand from a DIY deck-repair job I was doing, and Russell cut a few pieces of that to shore up the rotten sections and provide the support the original homebuilder omitted. Russell then did a fine job finishing the door installation. The door is beautiful and the room is noticeably quieter, cooler (in summer) and less drafty. Classic Exteriors wasn't my cheapest option, but I am very happy with their work and professionalism and am convinced I got my money's worth, especially when you consider Russell's repair of the wood framing under the door. Would definitely go with them again."

Doors questions, answered by experts

A well-installed storm door in good condition can increase your home's value. This upgrade is more than just an aesthetic change; it adds functionality, security, and insulation that can appeal to buyers. While it may not significantly raise the sale price on its own, a storm door improves curb appeal and can help attract more potential buyers. However, a shabby or poorly maintained one could have the opposite effect.

To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. The 2-foot by 6-foot boards will serve as your stiles, top rail, and horizontal and vertical mullions, and the wider board will serve as the bottom rail, which is usually wider than the other horizontal pieces. The plywood will serve as the panels, but you’ll need around five 1-foot by 6-foot boards to make your own panels if you want to stain the door rather than paint it.

Butterfly hinges are one of the most common types of hinges and you can use them all over your home. Though they’re common on doors, cabinets, and shutters, you can even find them on decor, like jewelry boxes, music boxes, and trunks. Doors may have basic butterfly hinges, while the hinges on cabinets and decor may be more ornate.

Swapping out old patio doors for something new can boost your home’s value. Fresh doors make your home look more modern and polished, add tons of natural light, and create a smoother connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Buyers love features that make a home feel open, stylish, and efficient, especially when updated doors come with better energy efficiency and security. High-end options like French doors can also bump the appeal even more, making your home stand out in a competitive market.

The width of your door jamb should match your wall thickness exactly, so it depends on your wall. For standard door openings, the width is equal to the width of a 2-by-4-inch  stud, plus the width of the drywall on both sides—about 1/2 inch each—which comes out to 4 9/16 inches. Block walls and framed walls that use 2-by-6-inch framing require a door jamb that’s 6 9/16 inches. You should always measure your finished wall thickness to get an accurate width for your door jamb material.
