"Hired Kings of Clean after having prior experience with their sister company, Cincinnati Gutter Boys. Like my experience with Cincinnati Gutter boys, the service, professionalism, and job quality was outstanding. It was a HUGE job (picture is for a portion of only the top deck), with a lot of need for coordination, but they took it on at a very fair price and did an amazing job. Even our general contractor's finish carpenter commented on what a great job they did and in my experience, contractors rarely praise someone else's work. Special recognition to Travis, who went the extra mile and went out of his way to communicate with us in a timely and proactive fashion. I would highly recommend them for any size job you have."

"I originally called Hall's because I was getting such terrible customer service from the landscaping company we'd selected for our spring cleanup. At the last minute, that other vendor came through, so we didn't use Hall's for that job. When it came time to go on vacation, I called Hall's to mow our lawn while we were gone. They were able to accommodate us on short notice. After returning from vacation, we realized we needed some extensive help with weeding and weed control in our plant beds. Hall's was able to get me on the schedule within just a few days, and the work was done on time. Tim and Bear did the work, and they were a real pleasure to deal with - very friendly and efficient. Tim took the time to explain to me what they had done, which plants were which (I don't know much about plants or landscaping and I'm new to the region as well) and which plants and weeds needed some special attention. Overall it was a good experience and I plan to use them for any lawn/yard/landscaping needs I have down the road."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Floating decks are a cost-effective and versatile option, but they come with some compromises. Since they sit on smaller footings instead of being deeply anchored, they’re more likely to shift over time, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or freeze-thaw conditions. Their low-to-the-ground design makes them more susceptible to moisture buildup and potential water damage.

The cost to repair a deck is between $900 and $3,500, depending on the cause and extent of the damage. For example, fixing a sinking deck caused by pest damage can cost between $200 and $600, while replacing sinking boards costs between $500 and $4,000.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.
