"I'm not really sure how to label the experience. It wasn't great, by far, but I suppose it could have technically been worse. Here's the low-down:
1. We had a lot of boxes and some fragile items such as China, etc. All boxes were clearly labelled as fragile when the contents were exactly that. To that end, when we arrived at our final destination and unloaded the truck, we found some heavier boxes put on top of the fragile boxes, and some of the fragile boxes literally chucked up on top in an unstable position- I clearly stated to them that nothing was to be on top of fragile boxes and to let me know if there were any issues. The did not say anything about it.
2. They put non-sturdy items underneath piles of boxes. For example, my coffee table and antique tea cart were placed on the floor of the back of the truck with items much too heavy, placed on top of them. My coffee table is also an ottoman and the cushion took two days to come back to normal.
3. We discussed that we had a lot of items to put in the truck and I asked that they use all of the available space to the best of their abilities- this clearly did not happen. We had two outdoor plastic (highly durable) cabinets that I asked them to place items inside- they did not. There was space left under the coffee table and under several other things that could have not only filled space, but provided support. In the end, we had to leave several things behind that absolutely could have fit in the truck had it been loaded properly.
4. The guys were friendly and there to do the job. I tipped them well, and even gave them a few things (corn hole boards) we were planning to get rid of anyway. That said, one of the guys had to leave early to go see his parole officer. I'm not judging on that- we all make mistakes in life- but losing a guy certainly slowed the process. They did bring another guy in about an hour or so later to help finish, which was great, but this was another person that I had to tip (again, I don't mind tipping for good work- I was a bartender for a long time- but had the other guy been able to stay, my overall cost would have been less for more than one reason.
5. Finally, this isn't the opinion of "some guy" who hired them. The moving company that unloaded us when we arrived in California, was far from complimentary of the packing job and due to a lack of use of ratchet straps and other restraints (that I willingly provided) was constantly concerned of items falling on them.
I guess all in all, it was a bad job. I realize that it has taken me over a year to write this review, but I was on Angie's List and felt I should share my experience. The time doesn't change the fact that the job was poorly performed. I liked the guys, despite the issues and inability to properly back a moving truck, so that's probably why I have a hard time saying it was terrible- but honestly, it was a bad experience and I would never use this company again.
