"Nicholas and his crew show up at 8:30 am everyday (mine was a large exterior job that took several days), work the entire day, clean up afterwards, and prices are reasonable. I even ask them to add or re-do certain rooms/areas & they always fit in those extras. I have already re-hired them on 2 occasions, and they do a very nice job paying attention to detail. Dependable and Trustworthy!"

"We are very pleased with Ohio Signature Painting. From beginning to end, their team walked us through the entire process, explained everything clearly and are very reasonably priced. We had our red exterior brick painted white (and who knew there were so many shades of white!). After the second primer coat dried, we were able to pick four shades of color and choose the one we felt looked best. I am so happy we were able to have those options because had we picked a color from just a piece of paper from the store, I don't think we would have got the fantastic results we did. I will definitely use this company again on our next upcoming painting / staining project (deck, shutters and front porch addition)."

"DWT did a very good job. They even power washed my wood deck and walkway. Strong work ethic. I would have rated their work with 5 stars, but 1). They didn't cover my newly installed landscape to protect it, so old paint scraps are all in it. 2). They didn't lay out tarp to protect my grass before they painted my gutters. Now I have gutter shaped paint stains on my lawn. 3). No clean up after the job. Scraps of old paint all over. I would hire DWT again."

"Garringer Painting recently stained my fence, and they did an outstanding job. The crew was prompt, professional, and paid close attention to detail. The stain was applied beautifully and really brought new life to the fence. They took great care with the prep and cleanup, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. 10 out of 10 — highly recommend! I’ll definitely be using them again for future projects."

"I dealt with Tim for the price and project details and then Jeff was the man who came out to do the job. The deck had previously been done by a guy who did not know what he was doing so Jeff power washed the entire deck and let it dry for 24 hours, then he sanded the deck and scrubbed it down with denatured alcohol to help remove any remaining paint from before. When the deck was dry, Jeff taped off everything and proceeded to edge everything before he rolled a nice thick layer of paint on the deck. We waited another 24 hours and Jeff returned to apply a nice second coat of paint on the entire deck. Tim and Jeff are very easy to work with and I will most certainly come back to them for future projects."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

If you want to achieve a deeper, darker stain color, wait 5 to 10 minutes before wiping it off. However, wipe it off faster for a lighter tone. When wiping off the stain during this part of the process, be sure to work in the direction of the wood’s grain for best results.

Adding a second coat of stain to wood can even out the color to some extent, but it won't drastically alter the hue if the initial application is too light or too dark. It's more effective at enhancing the richness of the color rather than significantly changing it. Ensure the first coat is dry before applying the second.

Whether to brush or roll stain on wood depends on the project and your preference. Brushing is ideal for smaller, intricate areas and offers more control over the application, ensuring thorough coverage and penetration into the wood's grain.

Conversely, rolling is efficient for more extensive, flat surfaces and can save time. However, it is not always the best fit for textured or uneven wood. Some projects may benefit from combining both methods, using a brush for detail work and a roller for broader areas. Ultimately, the choice between brushing and rolling depends on the specific requirements of your staining project.

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.

While the answer varies based on weather, 10 a.m. is a good time to start painting. The dew will have dried, meaning there’s no moisture on the house, and the temperature will likely be moderate and the sunlight less direct. Starting mid-morning should also give you enough daylight and pleasant weather to work on the job for several hours.
