"Very impressed with his expertise with HVAC. He's the kind of guy you want to come out and diagnose your problem. He has the kind of mind to solving your problem and not interested in just selling you a unit. He comes in to service and is looking out for the customer."

"The provider showed up in the estimated window and was very respectful of my house (coverings on his boots and he avoided wall/door damage while moving equipment). He cleaned/sanitized my basement HVAC system, my upstairs HVAC system, and finally my dryer vent. There was a little difficulty with the dryer vent cap on the roof (improper cap was installed prior to this service), so he performed the dryer vent cleaning from inside. I appreciate the adaptability.

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, HVAC zoning systems offer energy savings by allowing precise temperature control in different zones in your home. Rather than conditioning the whole house uniformly, these systems direct airflow where needed, preventing energy waste. Tailoring comfort to specific areas reduces energy consumption and lowers utility costs, making HVAC zoning an energy-efficient choice.

Yes, HVAC zoning is generally considered worth the investment by both experts and homeowners. Zoned systems offer significant benefits in convenience, efficiency, and comfort by allowing you to set different temperatures for various rooms or 'zones' in your house. This ability to heat and cool only the spaces you're using leads to energy savings and lower utility bills. Zoned systems are especially effective in multi-level homes that experience temperature fluctuations, but even smaller homes can benefit from the ability to adjust temperatures more quickly. While the up-front installation cost can be high, many find it's a worthwhile long-term investment, particularly for those who plan to stay in their home for a while.

To keep your air conditioner in good working condition, you should have it serviced by a professional at least once per year, ideally in the spring before the cooling season begins. If your AC unit is 10 years or older, consider servicing it twice a year (once in the spring and once in the fall) to catch potential problems early and help it reach its full lifespan. During a service visit, a technician will inspect, clean, and replace parts as needed. Regular maintenance helps avoid costly repairs. As a DIY task, you can also clean the evaporator coils annually.

A blocked return air vent can cause your HVAC system to work much harder and, therefore, less efficiently. The result is higher utility bills and poorer air quality. A blocked return air vent can also cause unpleasant dust, dander, and odors to linger in your home’s air.

Air filters with a high MERV rating, 11 or above, shouldn't cause airflow problems in most residential systems. However, the airflow can be restricted in some HVAC systems if they aren't designed for high MERV ratings. If in doubt, a local duct installer should inspect your ductwork so that you know what your system can handle.
