"Deck Renewal Systems delivered a beautiful, quality deck for our home! We are pleased with the outcome. The team was responsive, helped us to select a great material, was able to leverage existing framing (saved us money) and ensured the new deck was reinforced with updated support posts. They even flexed to accommodate our last minute decision to add a patio with another vendor so that the deck and patio worked together. The team was hard working and a pleasure to work with. Definitely recommend if you're looking to add a beautiful deck to your home!"

"Steve and Kerry of Ohio Deck Doctors (West Chester) did a great job repairing and refurbishing our 9-foot-high deck. The old composite decking was damaged, the railings needed repair, one joist needed replacing, and the stairway was unsound. This team was professional, skilled, friendly, and industrious. They replaced the decking with new composite, re-did the railing, and constructed a completely new stairway. Kerry communicated with us through the entire project. I liked the careful and cost-effective way they approached the project, fixing problems and making the whole thing look new without re-doing the parts that were still sound. They left the job site very clean as well. I highly recommend this company to fix what's wrong with your deck. We are very pleased with the final result."

"We cannot say enough great things about Tristate Complete Home Repair! We just finished up a partial renovation of the interior of our Hoosier Homestead farmhouse, and Tristate did a fabulous job! The house had spent decades under the care of our aging parents, so it needed a lot of careful attention to update nearly everything without compromising the unique historical beauty of the house. Owner Tim of Tristate brought decades of renovation experience to our project, leading a crew of workers representing all the trades. This meant fewer delays and mistakes on our project. No regrets here. We look forward to future work from Tristate!"

"Troy and his team were fantastic and went above and beyond during our install of a new dishwasher where the Home Depot guys "couldnt do it because of our copper pipes." Troy came the morning after I called, and also discovered a dangerous wiring problem that he was quickly able to fix. He and his team were very friendly and he went the extra mile to even clean the area where the old dishwasher was, before installing the new one. We will definitely use him again!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Yes, an elevated deck can increase a home's resale value. Homeowners can expect a 65% return on investment from the cost of a second-story deck installation. For example, if you spend $5,000 to install a second-story deck, that deck will add $3,250 to the value of your home.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. This addition helps the various wood boards contract and expand evenly throughout the years and reduces the chances of twisting, warping, and buckling.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.
