Specializing in European Automotive repair. Tires, Transportation, and Vehicle Inspections

"I had my 2009 Audi A6 taken to them at the end of January, 2019. The engine needed to be rebuilt. A tech (Michael) with Autobahn had agreed to complete the job for $6,802. He needed an initial deposit which I paid on February 14, 2019. Ultimately I paid the following 2/14 $3100 3/14 $1200 3/22 $1000 3/26 $1000 4/8 $500 4/9 $700 Total: $7,500 I finally received a call from Michael on 4/1 stating that the engine was beyond repair and needed replacing. He assured me that the shop could locate a used engine, he would update the timing components, and that the cost would be comparable. He stated while I would spend more on parts it would save drastically on labor and the quote would not change. The next day I received a quote for nearly $10,000. I quickly voiced my concern and stated that I could not budget or justify spending $10K on the vehicle and that if that were the case I needed the shop to stop all activities, return funds, and return the vehicle. They prepared a new quote which was $8728 which again I rejected. They then prepared a final one of $7745.09 which I agreed to. Weeks later, it was still not done. In May they apologized that the job was still not completed and wrote off the last $245.09 and said it would be done soon. June 7, 2019 I was informed they could not find an engine unless they ordered directly from Audi and that I could have the vehicle, the bad engine, and that they would be keeping 1/2 of the funds. He told me that he understood that 'I was emotional,' to which I informed him that this was not about emotion but was a business matter. After urging him to reconsider my offer he refused again and said he would keep half of the funds. I cannot stress caution enough when dealing with this business. There is a lack of ethics and professionalism strongly evident. Find another shop."

Welding questions, answered by experts

Yes, an LVL beam is more affordable than the cost of a steel I-beam, totaling between $50 and $200 per linear foot as opposed to the $100 to $400 per linear foot you’d pay for a steel I-beam. Not only is the wood material more affordable than steel, but it’s also more similar to traditional wooden beams and doesn’t require as much retrofitting to connect joists.

Lally columns are named after their founder, John Lally, who owned a construction company in the 1800s. He invented the columns as a means of providing temporary support for beams and rafters in homes his company was renovating. The original Lally columns were also made of steel, although the inventory used a thicker gauge metal, which provided additional support for larger projects and long-term structural solutions.

You should pick steel for your new support beam for a few reasons. While steel is more expensive than other materials, such as laminated veneer lumber or glulam, it offers the following benefits:

  • Fire-resistant

  • Unaffected by pests

  • Longer-lasting

  • Stronger against water damage (when galvanized against rust)

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

A steel beam is stronger than a wood beam and requires fewer vertical supports underneath, which means it’s a better option for larger structures or if you want an open space under your home that doesn’t have posts as obstructions. However, steel I-beams cost more than wood ones, and they can be difficult to install retroactively, as getting them into the basement area can be challenging, if not impossible.
