"Xcellent came out and installed the new drains for our downspouts and sump pump. They cleaned up the yard and removed all the flags marking different systems that are in the yard. They are a very professional company and the prices were very reasonable!"

"Had Betts Structural Engineering come and look at the foundation of a house we were in contract on. Josh came out and was professional and informative. He informed us the foundation was failing and explained what needed to be done. He throughly explained everything and told us how we could do it ourselves for much cheaper than a contractor could do it. In the end he saved us from a long and expensive process if we proceeded with the house."

"I actually had to call them 3 times before we could sell our house. We had some issues come up. I did used Angie's list for that one. Actually, I take that back they only came out twice. We were having water heater issues. We had to buy a new water heater from another company. Then, I couldn't replace the water heater because the floor drain was clogged. So we had to call them out again for the floor drain. I really liked them. I think their price is pretty reasonable."

"Peters is very professional- we've used them twice now. My feedback would be to provide an estimate. Both experiences, the plumbers tell us they can't give us a detailed quote, and then we get a bill in the mail weeks later. That makes me feel very uncomfortable."

"I had Drip N Drain' out to help with my water heater after waking up to a puddle surrounding it in my basement. Kyle was out within hours after my initial call, and let me know when to expect him so I could plan my day accordingly. He was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to give my husband and I all our options. After ultimately choosing to replace our water heater, Kyle stayed late to install to ensure we woke up the next morning with hot water. I have been a homeowner for ten years and there are few companies out there that approach things with such honesty and pride in their work. Definitely recommend!"

Foundation Drain Installation questions, answered by experts

Whether to waterproof your basement from the interior or exterior depends on several factors, including your budget.

Exterior waterproofing is generally considered the superior method because it stops water at the source, preventing it from seeping into and damaging your basement walls. This approach offers the most protection, making it ideal if you use your basement for storage.

By contrast, interior waterproofing is often less expensive and requires less labor because the area is more accessible.

For maximum protection against water leakage and moisture, applying waterproofing measures to both the inside and outside is the best solution. However, if you must choose only one, stopping water from the outside is the most effective approach to preserve your foundation and prevent damage.

Yes, it is generally unhealthy and can be dangerous to live in a damp basement. The damp air can negatively affect your breathing and lungs, and the moisture promotes mold growth and pest infestations. Inhaling mold spores or waste particles from insects and rodents attracted to the moisture can be hazardous. This damp, moldy air can also circulate into your main living area. It is crucial to resolve any moisture problems and implement preventative measures before using your basement as a living space.

No, you can’t drain your sump pump into your home’s sewer system. In fact, it’s against the law in many places because dumping extra water into a municipal water system can disrupt or overwhelm the treatment process. And for similar reasons, you shouldn’t discharge a sump pump into your septic system, either.

Yes, many people choose to bury their sump pump discharge pipes. When you leave the pipe visible in your yard, you might trip over it or accidentally damage it with your lawn mower. Plus, from an aesthetic perspective, hiding the discharge line underground looks nicer than leaving it out in the open. Before burying a sump pump pipe, review your local building codes to make sure your installation is compliant.

A small sump pump running infrequently uses an average of 10 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month. The average cost for electricity is $0.171 per kWh. The size and use frequency affect how much electricity it uses. Sump pumps average one-third to one horsepower (hp) motors. One hp is equal to 745.7 watts. Watts multiplied by the time your pump is running divided by 1,000 equals your average kWh. Multiply kWh by your average cost of electricity. In areas with high rain or a marsh basin, the average cost can be as high as $15-$25 a month.
