The Lake Doctors, Inc. is a family-owned and operated company with over 40 years and 180 employees of experience providing a full range of aquatic management services. We are devoted to the care and service of lakes and ponds, so you can be confident that we’ll keep your body of water in its best possible condition when we work together. We specialize in maintaining the quality of your lake, pond, or waterway by using top-quality materials and specialized equipment while applying innovative maintenance techniques. We strive to find aquatic solutions that protect the well-being of the fish and wildlife in your ponds and lakes.

"We bought some property in Loris, SC (near Myrtle Beach) that had been sadly neglected for many years prior to us purchasing it. On that property was a wildly overgrown 1.5 acre pond that was in great need of clearing to be able to start the pond rejuvenation process. Caleb Primm and his team showed up and in one day took down all of the trees and overgrowth around the pond! They were so professional and had some of the best customer service that I’ve ever experienced. Their attention to detail was impeccable, and we can’t wait to see the pond transformation over the coming months. Highly recommended this company!"

Fountains questions, answered by experts

Lifespans vary by material and manufacturer, but pond liners last anywhere from 10 to 75 years. For example, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pond liners have a life expectancy of up to 20 years. Other types of pond liners, including those made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), can last 40 to 50 years.

Pond water should be changed approximately once a week. When you change it, change around 10% to15% of the water. It’s important to monitor the quality of your pond water as this will determine if it needs to be changed more often, or if you should be changing more or less than 15% of it when you do so.

If you’re drinking the water, you can store it indefinitely as long as you properly treat it and your container doesn’t break down. Without any treatment system, you should only leave rainwater in a rain barrel for up to four weeks. If you’re using the water on your garden or lawn, you can store your water until algae start to grow.

One of the most important parts of building a pond is digging the right depth. Your pond needs to be at least one to two feet deep. The specifics of the depth will depend on factors such as the placement of the pond and whether you plan on having fish. If you have fish in your pond, it will need to be at least two feet deep.

A koi pond may add value to your home if it’s a feature sellers are looking for. Like pools, ponds can affect your property value depending on their condition, whether they’re a popular selling point, and how well they’re incorporated into your home’s landscape.
