"Hired to install tile around bathtub and floor in small bathroom. While are very happy with the quality of the work, initially I felt that the crew was professional until I realized that a bucket of grout that they left behind to dry weighed a ton and I was left to get rid of it up a flight of stairs. They also left a mess outside where they were cutting the tile which I got complaints about from my condo superintendent. I reduced my rating for customer service to a 3 based on these issues. Sal answered my emails promptly, price was fair, showed up early on the day promised and completed job in 2 days."

"Our small bathroom was dated and the shower was tiny, with a deep linen closet next to it that was hard to get into and wasted space. We wanted to lose the closet to expand the shower, but still needed some storage area. All the rose colored tile and dated brass fixtures had to go. We also needed a medicine cabinet (there was none - just a small mirror), a new vanity top, new toilet (the existing one was small and had originally been installed crooked), new floor tile, lighting, and all new brushed nickel hardware and plumbing.
We chose four contractors from Angie's list near our area. We met with and got estimates from the three who got back to us. We emphasized that we have a tight budget and are willing to procure supplies and do all the demolition, trash disposal, and painting in order to keep costs down.
We narrowed it down to the two contractors who impressed us the most with their experience and knowledge. Even though both estimates were reasonable (we know bathrooms can cost 20 grand), we went with VAP Contracting who offered us a much better price.
After we gave them a down payment, they provided the list of supplies we would be responsible for. They scheduled work for a month later which gave us a month to find and purchase the supplies (tile, grout, fixtures, etc.) We saved even more money by painting the existing vanity, which was well-built.
Victor Pascente and his crew were consistently punctual, never missing a day they said they'd be there. They offered excellent advice that saved us more money and made the bathroom even better. The tiling was expertly done, including a tiled shower bench and ceramic shelves. The molding and wainscoting they provided is high-end, with consistent use around the window, door, and floor, and coordinates beautifully with the style of our new fixtures. They even created a built-in a storage area, including a lower cabinet that incorporated the wainscoting for the door. Victor was very accessible via phone and email. They were flexible, respectful, and friendly, and cleaned up at the end of each workday.
We had to polish up the spackling a bit more before we could paint, and they did have to come back to straighten the medicine cabinet a little, but considering they saved us $5000 over the next closest estimate we have NO complaints. The bathroom came out better than we imagined and we would not have been able to do this without them.  We have a whole new beautiful, contemporary, and, most importantly, functional master bathroom.

"We recently hired Nathan for tile installation and a few small repairs in our home in Westchester, NY, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. He was professional, detailed, and impressively quick without sacrificing quality. King&Company workmanship was excellent, and they handled everything with care and precision. This has truly been the best experience we’ve had with any contractor or handyman. It’s rare to find someone so reliable and easy to work with—he exceeded our expectations in every way. Highly recommend his services!"

"Empire was amazing - we needed to replace/cover flooring in a room with crumbling tiles and grout. The salesman who first came was knowledgeable and offered many options and we locked in our sale price. It was easy to reschedule when we had a tornado in town and might not have had power the day of the install. Also, the flooring we had signed up for went out of stock in between the order and install time, so they approved for us to have a non-sale flooring to swap out when our time came to install at the sale price! On the day of the actual install, the installer was right on time, and did the whole room in just a few hours, checking in with me along the way with any questions and Sebastian did a beautiful job! We will absolutely be calling Empire again when we need other carpeting or flooring!"

Small jobs welcome

"In spring of 2023 I had my 7 1/2‘ x 9‘ kitchen fully remodeled with all new cabinets, quartz countertop, tile floors, and removal of dishwasher replaced by cabinet drawers. Debris control, and floor protection through my apartment was clean and efficient work by Patrick and his crew. And finished up with with cleaning and painting around the cabinets and painting the ceiling. Two years later, I’m very satisfied with the work of Patrick in his crew."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

For best results, you should remove the toilet in a bathroom before removing tile or installing new tile. If you don’t remove the toilet, it will be harder to fully waterproof the tile around the toilet, which could increase the risk of mold growth or plumbing leaks. If you have trouble removing the toilet, hire a plumber to help.

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from clay, but porcelain tiles are fired in a kiln at a higher temperature. This makes them more durable, but it also means porcelain is more expensive than ceramic at $3 to $5 more per square foot.

Even with the higher price point, many people choose porcelain over ceramic because there are more color and design options.

There are a few different tools you can use to score tiles. Manual tile cutters or tile scribes work well for scoring in straight lines. Tile nippers are one of the best options for scoring because they can make small and irregular cuts that larger tools may not be able to handle.

The tile spacing you should use will depend on the tile and where you’re installing it. Choosing the right tile spacers to maintain a consistent gap between your tiles is tricky. Generally, tile spacing shouldn’t be less than 2 millimeters on walls and 3 millimeters on floors because of stress relief requirements. Getting it wrong can result in uneven tiles and early repairs.

Granite countertops cost an average of $3,250 compared to $2,250 for tile countertops. Granite is also harder to DIY than tile, given its weight and bulk, which increases the overall labor cost of installation. Over time, both types of countertops may need sealing to remain resistant to water, heat, and other common kitchen elements.
