"My chest freezer broke down and I did not want to buy a new one since I could not afford the same size. I reached out to appliance parts pro and they were confident that what I ordered would fix my problem. $200 in parts later and I now have a broken freezer on my porch and am still paying the loan to this terrible company. They just want you to order parts and try them because they know you can't return them. I hate this company with every fiber of my being and will make sure that anyone that has a broken appliance will not use them. To top it off, their site is so screwed up that it give you an error trying to log back in. I ended up having to create THREE different accounts because every time I went to place a new order, it would not let me login and it would not send a password reset email. DON'T GET RIPPED OFF."

"Astar: S#!tshow Incorporated An absolute catastrophe from the moment I sent them money until they finally got their act together to finish the project four and a half months later (with mediocre results at best). Their ability to communicate was abysmal and they utterly failed to take any sort of meaningful responsibility several times over. They proved unable to track information both internally and especially coming from me (even by email!) and in the end seem not to have much of an understanding of the products they sell. The trouble initially arose from their failure to note the several times I told them I was in Putnam rather than Dutchess county. It turns out they're not licensed to work in Putnam, but rather than doing the right thing and telling me that so that we could find a solution, they gave me nebulous excuses about how there was a snag with the electrical permit and that it was going to take a little more time. They were quick to get some things installed (probably so I couldn't walk away from the contract if I learned what was really going on), but then were unresponsive and would only give me a runaround on when things would happen and never answered my questions fully. This issue almost screwed me out of a rebate as I had to tell them several times that I'm with NYSEG instead of Central Hudson before they got it right. Their initial timing estimate left me with the choice of shlepping diesel for a few weeks to keep my hot water running or dealing with 100+ gallons of fuel oil when the job was done, so I went with the former. That would've been easy if it had hit their early target of two weeks and a reasonable but manageable hassle at their late target of six. They left me cold for three unexpected months (Jan-Apr) during which I spent many hours and hundreds of dollars on diesel, firewood, and electric heaters (not to mention an astronomical electric bill). In compensation they took roughly $1200 off my $43000 bill, which feels about like getting a dollar tip on a $20 check. Along the way, there were other issues (such as their plan to leave the boiler "as a backup" for me to deal with despite my having told their sales rep point blank that my whole aim was to remove the boiler). The quality of work was OK, but by no means great. The vents they use are absurdly cheap, don't really open & close properly, and the control knob frequently comes out when I try to operate them. Information from the installation planning meeting was either ignored or changed on the fly but their technicians, and one of their guys gouged my mechanical room door while removing the old boiler tank (which would've been easily avoided with the extra minute's work to put a blanket over it) & didn't so much as apologize for it. On top of it all, I'm still finding trash from the job around my property. Finally, their design of the system doesn't allow different rooms to run different functions; an issue I never would have accepted if I'd known. (for what it's worth, that seemed a surprise to the technician who came back to address the non-functioning thermostat they initially left me with). Also: upon the end their last scheduled install day, and with zero warning that this was going to happen, the installer demanded that I pay the remaining $23000 balance right then and there as though everyone simply has that amount of cash in their checking account or available on their credit card at all times and would not leave until I put half on a card, only accepting the half payment because I could name issues they still needed to come back and fix. Jason, the rep that sold me the system in the first place was kind, courteous, and gave me lots of faith in that company. I don't believe that was misleading me intentionally, but I deeply wish that they'd sent someone less likable and more reflective of the way their company actually operates. They sell an image of professionalism that absolutely misrepresents them as a company. Listen to the complaints about their outlandish pricing and terrible service. Jason told me that Yelp offered to scrub the bad reviews for them for an exorbitant amount of money and to trust the other sites, but I can only conclude that it's a lot cheaper to manage your brand image on Angi and other, less ubiquitous review sites."

"I was extremely pleased with Simply Installs. Certainly one of the very best contractor experiences I've had. Technically, they seem very knowledgeable; they're nice guys and easy to work with; they show attention to detail (they brought mulch to put around one of the outdoor units that was being placed in a plant bed); they took good care of our house (wore booties, put down temporary mats to walk on); they were reliable; they came back after the job was done when I had questions about some minor trim work and the thermostat settings. I'd hire them without searching for another contractor if I had additional HVAC installs."

Appliancezone.com is a leading on-line retailer of appliance parts and accessories for do-it-yourself homeowners. Incorporated in 2008, it was started by CEO, Jim Allen and his wife Paula, who operated an appliance repair business for nearly fourteen years prior to starting the internet company Appliance Zone.

"This is the first online review I've ever written -- my experience with this company was that bad. Three aspects that deserve attention: 1) I placed an order and tried to cancel six minutes later. Turns out they don't accept cancellations. 2) I couldn't find a phone number, so I had to work the return/refund by email. The exchange was painful -- so unhelpful I felt like I was interacting with a bad chatbot. 3) I ended up eating shipping costs (expected) and got hit for a 50% restocking fee (unexpected) because I refused the package instead of paying to ship it back. Didn't matter that it went to the correct address, was clearly labeled, and had prior return authorization. So I ended up with a $21 refund on a $60 order, and a lesson learned about where not to buy appliance parts."

Family owned & operated. I-81 corridor from Watertown to Binghamton, including Ithaca, Cortland, Syracuse area.East from Albany going west to Batavia area. Also, covering Hudson Valley Region.

"One word to describe Holbrook Heating, INCOMPETENT!!! **STAY AWAY, UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME, MONEY AND HAVE UNNECESSARY AGGRAVATION IN YOUR LIFE** I purchased an extended warranty with the company I bought my HVAC unit, and Holbrook Heating was their designated contractor to install and maintain. HVAC unit was installed on 12.4.19, the compressor had to be replaced 3 times in 3 years, which is UNHEARD of, and it still did not work!!! After the 2nd compressor went at end of June 2022, I was told from Holbrook, they no longer service my area, so I would have to contact the new service company. I had to pay $149 for service call. New service company said I needed a new compressor and freon as there is a big leak. I told them that is impossible as compressor was just replaced a year ago and freon replaced, that means this would be the 3rd compressor! When they heard that, they told me they did not want to get get involved in this mess as they've never heard of 2 compressors breaking down in 2 years in all the years they've been in business. They said it's clear there is something gravely wrong and Holbrook had to deal with it. That's when Holbrook said they would do me a favor, (wink wink) and replace for me. Because of their incompetence, I went without A/C basically this whole summer! They installed 3rd compressor and added more freon on 8.16.22, I specifically asked them if they fixed the leak, as I cannot go through this anymore, the tech said there was no leak, valves needed to be tightened (I had to pay for freon thats not covered under warranty). 3 months later not working again! Rather than come back to address issue in mid November, when I still had warranty, (heat was only blowing out warm, then turned to cold air) they placated me stating all was fine with unit as its more energy efficient now. In beginning of December compressor started making really loud noises again. When I called them on 12.12.22, I was told my extended warranty expired on 12.4.22!!! And now I would have to pay $250 for service call and $250 an hr after that, as again, THEY NO LONGER SERVICE MY AREA. I then asked to speak to Scott Rossen, the owner, as how could he charge me this amount when clearly there's something wrong!! I'm still waiting for a call back, I won't hold my breath! Since I was no longer under warranty, I called another HVAC person, the first thing he told me is I had a huge leak and my freon is pouring out again!!! This is the reason why the compressor kept on breaking down. The compressor would need to be replaced again if I didn't call the new HVAC company. Also the thermostat Holbrook replaced, was not compatible with my system, so that's why heat never came out hot, only warm, then turned to cold air. New HVAC person fixed leak and installed proper thermostat within 4 hrs that Holbrook couldn’t fix in 3 years!!!! I had to pay $2200 in total for this visit (freon, new thermostat and their time). In total I paid almost an additional $3,000 because of Holbrook's incompetence. I'm more annoyed over the unnecessary aggravation and the time I wasted on them. I purchased a new HVAC system so I wouldn't have issues, all I had were issues because of them ughhhh"

To reset your air conditioner, start by turning it off at the thermostat. Then, shut off power to the AC system at the circuit breaker. Next, find the “reset” button on your AC unit and hold it for three to five seconds. The unit should beep several times. If your air conditioner doesn’t have a reset button, leave the circuit breaker off for 30 minutes. Afterward, turn the power back on at the breaker and program the thermostat to “cool” to test the system.

Mold in your air conditioner isn't a good thing, as it can be harmful to your health. If the mold travels through the ductwork or is blown out of the A/C, you and your family can inhale mold spores and develop respiratory illnesses and other problems. Preventing mold from growing in the air conditioner will help protect your health.

Many HVAC manufacturers provide warranties that encompass the cost of a new compressor, with durations ranging from 5 to 10 years, depending on the brand. These warranties cover critical components such as the compressor, condenser, connecting tubing, evaporator, and refrigerant charge. Moreover, they often include the necessary labor for replacement or repairs. Keep in mind that premium-brand compressors may offer lifetime warranty options. If refrigerant levels are low, it can cause the evaporator coil to freeze up. Low freon causes a drop in pressure, which will make the coil too cold and cause moisture to freeze on the coil. Your system may be low on refrigerant because of a leak

Make sure to have maintenance performed twice a year, and contact your local HVAC technician if you suspect your system has low freon levels.

The $5,000 rule for HVAC systems helps homeowners decide whether to repair or replace an AC or furnace. Take the quote for the HVAC repair cost and multiply that by the age of the HVAC system. If the total is higher than $5,000, it’s more cost-effective to replace the system. If the total is lower than $5,000, consider repairing the system.
