"Paula is an absolute dream. We had an enormous project ahead of us and she never stopped working. Firstly, Paula is kind and has a wonderful energy. She knows her business and stands by you when faced with making emotional decisions. She has transformed our entire home, bedrooms, closets, basement, garage, mud room. Our house feels lighter and everything is in its right place. Do yourself a favor and hire Paula. You and your family will be thankful you did."

"I can't say enough good things about this team! After 35 years of living in the same four-room apartment, I had/have a lot of STUFF, which made the task of replacing wall-to-wall carpeting, kitchen flooring. and some furniture nearly impossible to figure out - how does a single person with a recent hip replacement and back issues empty the bottoms of four closets and furniture being moved or replaced? How does she cart out heavy bags of trash - down a flight of steps! - as she downsizes her belongings? How does she pack up everything that's left AND move it from room-to-room as the two-day carpet installation progressed from one half the apartment to the other? How does she then find solutions for where to put all that stuff when it gets unpacked? The answer: HIRE ORGANIZED THERAPY!! Talk about one-stop shopping - they do it all! From the free consultation before hire to the completion of the job, they were amazing. They brought in all the packing containers that would be needed and a portable garment rack - on a Friday, we had things sorted, packed up, and in a single room and they got the trash AND old furniture downstairs and out of here. When I panicked over the realization that everything would need to be moved out of that room on Monday evening between the days of carpet installation, they accommodated an unscheduled visit and moved it all in under two hours. Back on Wednesday to unpack and implement solutions - they assembled and set up the units that I'd purchased and helped me figure out where certain things should go. They were kind enough to leave their containers for me to finish the job throughout the week rather than dump my belongings and grab their stuff when their job was done - they will return to pick them up now that they are empty. Not only did they "get the job done", but it was as much of a pleasure as a job like that could be - I felt like I was working with friends! They worked with me and around me (and my little yorkie) - they helped me with the process without judgement and were respectful of my preferences and choices. I LOVE my "new" apartment and I honestly could NOT have done it without them! I will definitely be working with Organized Therapy again in the future - to complete the process in my other spaces that weren't on critical path for the carpets/floors (tops of closets, attic, garage), and I highly recommend them to anyone!"

"Angel did a bathroom gut for me which included tile, plumbing, electric, painting. The job ran right on schedule. they work clean and neat. He was able to help choose perfect colors and wall paper. He was very responsive and did exactly what he said he was going to do. This is the 3rd time I hired him and I would have no hesitation hiring him again."

"I don't have enough good things to say! I needed a pretty simple closet repair - and instead I got a pretty simple, VERY NICE closet update! It's looks amazing and is functional. I literally have a list of things that I'm discussing for him to help me further to build/re-model other areas. So professional, detailed, highly recommend!"

"I hired Jakob and LI developers to remodel my Kitchen and first floor bathroom. Jakob was attentive to my wishes and very detail oriented. His crew showed up everyday ready to work and the time of the turn around was great as I still needed to live in the house. Beautiful work and Jakob was always there either over the phone or in person when I needed anything. Great outcome overall highly recommend."

Closets questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on material, customization level, and additional features like lighting or sliding doors.

Some features and upgrades you can add (some of which increase the closet’s value) are: modular shelving, motion-activated lighting, climate control, custom lighting, cigar humidors, revolving shoe racks, jewelry shelves, custom woodwork, and built-in laundry hampers. While only truly luxury closets have all of these, many custom closets have at least one special feature listed above.

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

A standard walk-in closet has dimensions of 7 feet by 10 feet at a minimum and an average of 100 square feet. Remember that the dimensions of the closet aren’t necessarily the usable space. This means that a 100-square-foot walk-in closet with shelves on each wall and an island may only have a walkable area of 50 square feet or less. Make sure you consider the effect of additions when you plan the room—mockups are a great idea.
