"Northern basements was able to fit us in quickly, pulled our crooked cement wall back in-place and sealed the wall to prevent future leaks.  The work was timely, communication was friendly and detailed, and price was as to be expected for the large amount of work that needed to be done.  We are very pleased with the whole process as well as the results.

"Took 3 visits but was well worth the time, attention and patience to get the job done right. First day was inspection and quote for repairs/materials. Work started that day to patch the cement crown that was cracked and channeling water down one side of the chimney eroding bricks. A bowed metal plate on the chimney to shed water between the two flue caps was flattened and sealed with cement so it did not show from the ground and so flies would stop entering into the house thru one of the flues. Crumbling mortar was replaced between bricks and bricks were waterproofed. The chimney was measured and the cap to cover the entire chimney was ordered. The 2nd visit got rained out. The 3rd visit was a good weather day and the cap was assembled, installed and cemented in place. It is amazing how strong the animal guard around the 4 sides of the chimney is. The crew at all times was friendly, courteous & very competent being careful to do the entire project as if it was their home."

"Woodford brothers did a great job waterproofing my basement. There estimate was right on par with other companies and actually a bit lower. The workers were very professional and very respectful of my property and house. Shoutout to Hunter who answered all questions thoroughly and didn’t mind at all how many I had as he was working! They showed up on time and worked all day, barely taking breaks. And so far, and we’ve had a few rainy days, we have had no water in our basement. I would not hesitate to recommend Woodford Brothers."

"Barn Rescue – My barn was hit by a vehicle, which broke a large post and pushed section of siding out from under the roofline, plus major damage at ground level. Brad shored it up for the winter with an array of jacks and an enormous chain to ensure the thing wouldn’t fall down till they could return in the spring. Come spring, they fully replaced the damaged section’s support members and facade, and added bracing to the attic, rendering it stronger than before. Foundation support: The sagging beams and jerry-rigged support columns in the dirt basement of our 18th century house were inadequate. They dug and poured a dozen footings and lally columns, supporting a line of new 6x6 and 9x9 beams that provide solid support to the house above. They showed up promptly every day, worked fast, and left the site clean and finished. Both Brad and Chad have a deep knowledge about old houses and the techniques that were used, and I felt my historic register property was in good hands."

"Darin and his crew at Hilltop were professional, courteous, knowledgeable and timely. Hilltop handled the excavation, permits, concrete pour, framing, electrical, roofing, siding, and finish of the garage project. It will definitely be an added value to my home. Hilltop did an excellent job, especially in the adverse winter conditions. I would absolutely hire Darin/Hilltop again. Darin was also excellent in communicating via email, text, and/or voice. This was a convenience to me as I do not have cell reception at work."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Build your seasonal routine around the local climate to maintain your masonry work. Inspect your Plattsburgh property in the spring for spalled bricks and failed mortar caused by freeze-thaw cycles. Clear organic debris away from foundations and chimney caps every fall to prevent moisture retention. Complete all major repointing and crack sealing before temperatures drop in autumn, as NY winters halt safe exterior mortar applications.

Helpful?

Masonry work often impacts your surrounding home systems. Chimney repairs directly affect your heating system draft and carbon monoxide safety, requiring a professional inspection before and after the project. Foundation repairs disrupt basement waterproofing membranes and drainage systems due to the high water table in Plattsburgh. Deep excavations for footings risk hitting buried utility lines, making a call to the NY utility dig line absolutely mandatory.

Helpful?

Choosing a professional for masonry work requires verifying local experience and proper insurance coverage. Ask contractors about their specific experience handling Plattsburgh winters, cold-weather mortar pouring, and frost-depth foundations. Request local references from recent regional projects to confirm their expertise. For properties in historic districts, hire specialists trained in historically accurate restoration techniques. Always confirm your contractor carries mandatory workers' compensation and general liability insurance.

Helpful?

Safety is critical during masonry work, especially with NY weather conditions. Contractors must use heated enclosures and warm water when temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent structural failure. High winds off Lake Champlain require strict scaffold securing and fall protection. Professionals must also use HEPA-equipped dust controls to manage silica dust and test older structures for hazardous materials like lead and asbestos before starting repairs.

Helpful?

When planning masonry work in Plattsburgh, you have several options depending on your project. General contractors handle full renovations and hire out the brickwork. Specialty masonry contractors focus on stonework and mortar for residential neighborhoods. You should hire chimney specialists for fireplace repairs and foundation contractors for below-grade structural needs. Restoration masons provide expert care for the historic Victorian homes found near the lakefront and downtown areas.
