A duplex outlet simply means that the receptacle has two plug-in outlets for two plugs. It’s a common design choice for homes. The two outlets should be wired identically during installation so the hot side is the same for both.

Before the widespread use of PVC, affixing a ground wire to plumbing pipes was generally considered to be an acceptable workaround. Nowadays, not so much. There are plenty of nonmetallic water pipes and fittings out there, so any ground previously provided by the metallic piping would be interrupted in these cases, which is dangerous.

It prevents electrical surges, protects your home from things like electrical fires, and prevents you from getting shocked if an errant surge runs through your power line. Without grounded wires, your appliances could also get damaged during lightning storms.

You can install a three-prong outlet without connecting any ground and plug in three-prong electronics into that outlet. The devices will function normally, but you won’t get any of the protection that grounding provides, so there’s an increased risk of serious problems if something goes wrong.

It’s recommended that you test GFCI outlets monthly with the test and reset buttons. At minimum, you should test GFCI outlets when entering a new season, or every three months. These are important home safety features that you should ensure work properly.
