"Ultimate pros. Extremely efficient and knowledgeable. Called for a quote for insulation and received an education on all aspects of my attic. Brian performed a complete in house audit of my energy systems while he was here. Just wish I was in a financial position to hire a top shelf professional organization such as theirs. My loss."

"Green Audit performed a home energy audit on my home. I originally purchased the deal they offered through Angie's List for $75, but was informed by Green Audit that the audit can be done for free provided by funding through PSEG so Green Audit refunded the $75 and there was no charge for the audit. Matt and Richard performed the audit. I thought they were very professional and provided a lot of useful information. After the completion of the audit they provided me with an estimate for recommended efficiency work and a ROI summary of what the work could save me in money over time. The estimate they provided was extensive and included a lot of items for energy efficiency, some of which you would not get from a typical insulation company, I thought their pricing was a bit on the high side and I decided not to use them."

"It went really well. They came in immediately and sealed off the basement from the rest of the house (There's no door to the basement)). They also set up very large and powerful hepa-air-cleaning units which they kept running through the whole job and in fact until the industrial hygienist returned for post-testing after the job was completed. The manager Mike assured me that the job would be done with the utmost effort and care and that's exactly what happened. The main workers, Marcello and Israel were terrific, meticulous, hard-working, reliable, responsive to any concerns I raised. I really couldn't have asked for any more. The post-test results showed Zero spores of the two bad molds with high readings in the pre-job testing. It's a really nice feeling when people come in and do the job just as they promised to."

"Joe did a great job on this, our dining room was a add on to connect the original home and the garage and had no insulation and boy in the winter it was unusable as well as the kitchen basically (the best part of the house). Joe came and drilled small holes in the attic floor that they sealed up later to allow for blowing in the insulation. And they cleaned up well. we have a 20 month old but there was nothing left over for the baby to put in her mouth. Joe is great! Our dining room is toasty and the kids can play in there year-round Plus they are were less than half of the expensive "efficiency" guys PSEG sent over. Those providers wanted to charge $10,000+ for basically the same job."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

A home energy audit costs about $420 on average, with prices ranging from $100 to $2,250 or more. The final cost depends on factors like your home's size, location, the thoroughness of the audit, and the specific tests performed. A basic Level 1 walk-through inspection typically costs between $150 and $200, while a comprehensive Level 3 audit with detailed testing and a report costs around $900. Homeowners may be able to use the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act’s Energy Efficient Home Improvement credit to cover up to $150 of the audit cost.

Costs for common individual tests include:

  • Blower door test: $350

  • Duct testing: $100

  • HERS test: $375

  • HERS certification: $200

  • Infrared imaging: $200

You can increase your home’s load factor by replacing fuse boxes with a circuit breaker, hiring a licensed electrician to upgrade your electrical panel, upgrading wiring, or installing subpanels. An electrical inspection by an expert can help determine the state of your current electrical systems and how they can be improved.

Keep the unit full but not overloaded, ensure door seals are tight, set correct temperatures, and avoid frequent door openings. Position the appliance away from heat sources for optimal performance.

Some types of electric fireplaces use more electricity than others. Models that produce 1,500 watts will have more of an effect on your heating bill than 750-watt models.

Electric fireplaces use an average of $1.85 of electricity every eight hours. These minimal operational costs aren’t likely to make a big difference in your electric bill—unless you’re using it as a primary heating source for your home and it’s running most of the time.

If you have central air conditioning, it’s fine to run your AC all day if that’s what you want—as long as the AC unit is in good condition. But if your AC runs constantly when you don’t want it to, there may be a problem with your system (like the ones we’ve mentioned above). Window AC units and wall air conditioners aren’t as powerful as central AC, so you should only run those kinds of air conditioners for eight to 12 hours at a time.
