"What started as a simple top soil delivery ended as a new driveway install. Initially, my husband hired Sean of Limitless Landworks to deliver some top soil. He made such a positive impression on us that we decided to have him install a much needed new gravel driveway. From the initial excavation to the final laying of the gravel, everything was handled professionally, the service was exceptional, and the final product was better than we could have imagined. Sean is very knowledgeable, a hard worker, has impeccable attention to detail, is an excellent communicator and a super nice guy! We couldn’t have been more pleased with our experience!"

"I hired A-1 Tank Removals and Installations to replace my leaky oil tank located in my basement. A-1 is a 3 generation family owned business. Service was excellent. Joe and his son were very professional. They were on time and very careful to cover my floor and stairs. They were meticulous with their work and everything was completed in about 5 hours. Clean up was also good both in my basement and outside my house."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes. A metal detector is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find your septic tank. However, metal detectors can be too expensive (costing upward of $300 in some cases), and not everyone has a metal detector just lying around. If that’s the case for you, you can also take a long metal rod and poke it into the ground at regular intervals until you hit something—likely your septic tank lid.

The average cost of excavation is approximately $3,200, with typical projects ranging from $500 to $15,000. Depending on the contractor, you may be charged between $50 and $200 per cubic yard or an hourly rate of $40 to $180 for an excavation specialist. The total cost is influenced by several factors, including the project size, the amount of soil to be removed, and the soil's condition. Hard soil, tree roots, or excessive rocks and clay can increase the price, potentially adding $200 to $1,200 to the final bill. Other factors that can drive up costs include the presence of nearby structures that complicate the work or tight spaces that require manual excavation instead of heavy machinery.

Septic drain lines (or leach lines) are typically buried between 18 and 36 inches underground, and should be at least 6 inches below the surface. These pipes are perforated and surrounded by filtering materials like sand or gravel. Burying the lines at this depth helps minimize odors and allows bacteria and other biological processes in the soil to effectively treat the wastewater. Burying lines too close to the surface can cause issues unless the soil is very compact and stable.

A joint utility trench, or joint trench, is a long, buried ditch on a property that contains two or more utility lines rather than running the lines in multiple trenches. Some utilities, like gas and electric or electric and communication lines, are better suited to joint trenching, while others, like water and sewer, are not allowed to be in the same trench.

The digging depth will depend on the size of the trencher you use. Even smaller units can dig up to 4 feet deep, which is plenty for a DIY job. However, much larger trenchers can reach a depth of 18 feet and are better used by a team of pro contractors, not a single DIYer. As with all home improvement projects, use the right tool for the job and proceed with caution.
