You can technically just paint over hairline cracks in plaster since these cracks are often harmless, but this will mostly be a waste of paint. Paint will only hide the hairline crack for a few months before it shows up again. The best solution is to repair the crack with flexible filler or joint compound before repainting.

Painting or plastering over water-damaged wall plaster is only a temporary fix and doesn’t fix the real problem. If you must, wait until the surface is completely dry before applying a new layer. Venetian plaster is very easy to maintain. As long as your plaster is properly sealed, you can safely wipe it down with water and mild soap to remove any scuffs or stains. And if your plaster wall cracks or chips, you can often simply patch it rather than replastering the whole wall to restore its appearance.
