"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

"I called three Angie's List chimney contractors, all came by to provide an estimate of the "repointing" work that I thought needed to be done. Two of the contractors STOOD ON THE GROUND and provided estimates, one was for $1,500, the other for $5,000. Only D&J went on the roof to look at the chimney and found a major structural issue with the entire top of the chimney cracked both vertically and horizontally. D&J changed $60 for the estimate, which was applied to the work. I contracted with them to rebuild the top 2/3rds of the chimney, clean the flues, replace two fireplace dampers with flue top mounted models, and replace the caps. I was starting a new job and requested the work be done before the start date, prior to signing the agreement with D&J. The work was professionally completed on time and budget. There was an extra charge for additional concrete, but I was consulted ahead of time and approved. They also replaced the damper and pipe from the furnace for free. I believe the work was done well and within the terms of the original agreement. I shudder to think about the mess I would have had with the contractors that didn't bother to go on the roof to check the chimney. D&J was professional and I will use them in the future.

"I have to admit that I was very skeptical about chimney companies in general because they are notorious for ripping people off. To my surprise we felt that Skyline on the mark. My husband felt the technician was knowledgeable and honest. He replaced the chimney cap which was what we called about. My biggest concern was him trying to upswell. us. He posted out the and took pictures of the damaged flashing and crown cracks so we knew it needed repair. The additional price was within reason."

Fireplace Cleaners questions, answered by experts

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

You may have some limitations when looking for materials and a design to reface your gas fireplace versus what’s available for a traditional wood-burning fireplace. Some gas fireplace surround ideas include stone, concrete, brick, tile, wood, steel, and plaster. However, you should check with the manufacturer of your gas fireplace model to determine if you have any limitations on what you can use.

No, you can't apply limewash with a roller and expect good results. Limewash is as much a technique as it is a type of paint, and a freehand application with a brush is part of that technique. Hand brushing a large area can be tiring, but limewash goes on easily and only requires thin coats to be effective.

Cracked panels, worn-out seals, faulty dampers, and firebrick damage often need professional attention.

You can turn a red brick white through a process called whitewashing. Whitewash isn’t a stain but rather is made from water and white latex paint. Adding more water to the mix will make the solution look lighter when applied, and adding more paint will make it look more white.
