Customers say: Quality work

"Pete was very professional. He re pointed all the mortar on my slate walkway. He completed the job, on time and on estimate. He was very upfront about the mess it would create and warned me ahead of time to move cars etc. When the workers were done, they cleaned up. The work was done approx 6 months ago and shows no signs of poor workmanship."

"I needed to have a seal coating for my driveway. I had several estimates given to me and I chose to use Orion Seal Coating. I called and Chris the owner answered, who was very pleasant to deal with. He was professional, competitively priced, and explained what needed to be done. We set a date and time and he came on time just like he said he would. He prepared the driveway by cleaning and blowing the entire driveway edged where the driveway met the pavers and apron, so that there was no grass between them. He even used some kind of machine that smoothed the driveway to make it even and then seal coated it. Chris was meticulous in every aspect of what needed to be done. He was careful, knowledgeable, professional, meticulous, and careful throughout the entire job. There is no question that I am very satisfied with the price, workmanship, and professionalism of Orion Seal Coating. Without reservation, I would recommend that anyone needing a driveway seal coating or any type of paving job call Orion Seal Coating as I am sure that they will be as satisfied as I am."

"Santos and his crew did a fantastic job, They replaced the asphalt driveway, reset the existing brick apron on the driveway, replaced the landing on my front steps with bluestone, powerwashed everything and put down fresh polymeric sand on my front walk and apron. Two companies that I contacted never called me back, and one did not want to do repairs, only new installations. I would definitely recommend Empire."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

An ideal driveway gradient is between 2% and 5%. Anything lower than 1% or higher than 15% can cause problems for your car or property. A driveway with less than a 1% slope increases your likelihood of flooding and water damage, while a driveway with a 15% grade or higher can be too steep for safe traveling.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

When hiring an asphalt paving contractor to install your driveway, ask as many questions up front as possible. Here are a few questions to ask a prospective driveway contractor:

  • How many years of experience do you have?

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • Do you have worker’s compensation?

  • Do you use subcontractors on your projects?

  • Do you clean up after the job is done?

  • Who is responsible for any damage to lawn or landscaping?

  • Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • Do you give free estimates?

  • What is the timeline for completion?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • Can you provide at least three references?

  • Can I see some of the work you’ve done?

The dimensions of a driveway apron vary based on local building codes, the width of your driveway, and the distance between the driveway and the road. On average, aprons range from 12 to 24 feet wide and 8 to 18 feet long. Typically, the end of the apron connected to the driveway matches its width—such as 10 to 12 feet for a single-car driveway—while the end at the street flares out to allow cars to turn in and out more easily. In some areas, you may not be responsible for the portion of the apron that extends beyond the sidewalk, but this depends on local laws.
