"Dealing with Bilt-Rite and owner Mike Ferraraccio was a pleasure. From the design to the finished project it was a very streamlined process and communication was bar none. The workers were very professional and competent. The owner visited the work site several days per week to ensure schedules and timelines were being met. It’s not often you can put your complete trust in a company but we did with Mike and Bilt-Rite. We would not hesitate to work with them again."

"Bottom Line Up Front: Paulo is THE BEST, and you should call him for all your household carpentry needs. Work Performed: Structural Carpentry - Support for addition room above my two-car garage. Paulo replaced an undersized garage header (two 18” deep x 18’ long LVLs), and sistered 21 floor joists (9.5” deep x 19’ long LVLs). Why Paulo and his crew is THE BEST: Personable. Thorough. Great communication. Extremely high-quality work. Reasonable prices. Paulo and his crew showed up on time every day, worked long hours, and promptly completed the job in ONLY TWO DAYS. I called four separate contractors for quotes on the job. Paulo was the most thorough in analyzing the specifics of what needed to be done, and he clearly communicated his plan of execution. The job was tricky because the garage header is located below an eight-foot-wide picture window, and the header needed to be jacked up to remove 1-1/8” of sag in the floor above”. Paulo clearly communicated jacking up the floor could cause a crack in the window, but took extra care to help avoid it (constructed an additional support wall on the 2nd floor to help take some of the pressure off the exterior wall while jacking up the header). Guess what…. NO CRACK IN THE WINDOW! Paulo even performed additional work beyond what was included in the initial scope AT NO ADDITIONAL LABOR COST. Paulo cares. Paulo does high-quality work. Paulo does things the right way. This included removing/reinstalling numerous pieces of siding, cutting/installing OSB, Tyvek wrapping the exterior wall, and caulking to ensure a watertight seal. I was also highly impressed with his knowledge of residential building codes. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, AND CALL PAULO."

"Hiring a contractor when you are used to doing the work yourself is always difficult. How do you find that person open enough to see your vision? How do you know they can do the work, and at a price you can afford? All I can say is that we found the perfect company with JMW Builders. It started with meeting Dylan who met with me several times, was always available to text or talk. Together we talked about my husband's and my vision for the work, chose colors and ordered the materials. The day they arrived he and his partner Shane worked with Matt to strip the old deck off and be there when the order was delivered. I didn't even have to be home! Dylan and Shane are talented professionals who listen to the owner but also aren't afraid to share their professional opinion. I appreciate that because when you are investing in a project you want it to turn out the best it possibly can. Their opinions guided the project to a successful end. Before they began, I decided to add a new pergola. Dylan helped me choose one that worked best with the design and the construction of it is an amazing addition to the deck. The team kept the construction very organized, they made certain to clean each night and when needed, place boards down for my dogs to access the backyard. When I needed some bars installed in my house in an emergency, all I had to do was call and they were there. I cannot say enough about their professionalism, talents and work ethic. I highly recommend them."

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

Federal architecture is most common in urban areas throughout the New England states, including the older parts of New York, Pennsylvania (namely, Boston and Philadelphia), Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The style also dominated in parts of Georgia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, so many historical homes in the area embody this home design. Salem, MA, has two historic districts that predominantly feature this architectural style: Chestnut Street District and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

No, it’s not legal for unlicensed individuals to conduct structural calculations for buildings or building repairs. Not only do licensing requirements prevent DIYers from tackling this project, but mistakes can also be extremely dangerous and put your property and anyone inside or near it at risk of severe injury or even death. You should always hire a licensed and certified local structural engineer to make structural calculations.

No, space planning is not only relevant for new spaces. With the help of a professional architect, you can still create a space plan for an existing space.

Balancing aesthetics with functionality amidst space planning is important. To do so, you could consider consulting both an interior designer and an architect to fulfill both these needs. Or you can tackle it on your own by prioritizing personal touches amidst space planning that add to the look but don't take away from the livability of the space.

While you will always work with a team of professionals at some point during your home build, homeowners with experience can take on some part of the process. Manage the initial brainstorm, brief writeup, and floor layout phase with minimal assistance before contacting a general contractor. And while you can purchase stock blueprints for some home designs, it's always best to speak with professionals when choosing one ideal for your property.
