Customers say: Quick response

"Mike was excellent to deal with, when asked for a quote he got back to me asap. Due to the covide issue we are deal with there where some state mandated delays, but threw it all Mike stayed in touch and kept me up dated. Great customer service! The job was a big one painting one side of our locale church. They did everything they said they would do and the job was done quick. Looks great and everyone seems happy with it. Will be looking forward to working with them again."

"They did great work. We ended up reducing the scope a bit, but it was still a worthwhile project. The reason for the half star deduction was due to some scheduling issues we ran into. It would have been nice to have had the work done much sooner, but still we are very pleased with the outcome. They completed work in one day that would have taken me a week."

"Chris was very motivated and started the job promptly. His work ethic was great, staying late a couple of days late to complete job on time as agreed. He reviewed any issue found and was flexible when extra work was needed. The quality of the work was great in making the breezeway siding look the same as the garage, so with the paint job the house/garage improvement was dramatic. His pricing was reasonably and his clean-up appreciated. We would definitely recommend Chris to others and would engage him for work ourselves."

"Rick installed a new metal roof on a large barn. He went over and beyond in not only installing the roof, but also securing old supports that have saved the barn. Rick and his crew are professional and did the job in a very clean and timely manner."

Painting questions, answered by experts

You can apply stain over peeling stain, but it’s not a good idea. Your old stain will get in the way of your new stain bonding to the wood, so you’re likely going to see the same issue again shortly after application. Your best option is to sand off the old stain and clean the surface thoroughly before applying new stain.

You can weather a new wood fence by applying vinegar with steel wool as a way to fade some of the coloring. You may also find it easier to stain your entire fence a new color instead of trying to get newer fence boards to match an older one.

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

On most untreated wood fences, there is no need to sand before treating. You typically only need to sand if there’s an old coat of paint or stain on your fence. If you do need to sand off a previous paint or protective coating (like an old stain or sealant), use medium-grit sandpaper.

Typically, a fence requires one to two coats of stain. The exact number can vary depending on the porosity of the wood. For specific guidance, it's best to check the manufacturer's instructions. After applying the first coat and letting it dry completely, you can assess the finish. If it appears patchy, uneven, or you want a more saturated color, a second coat is recommended. An extra coat can also help cover lap marks.
