Never remove more than 30% of a tree’s foliage during pruning—even if your tree is really overgrown. Removing this much foliage at a time could kill your tree.

Leaving the tree stump and letting it rot is never a good idea, as this leads to insect infestations and other frustrations. Remember that vinegar can kill the surrounding grass and plants should it pour over the edge.
