We are an owner opperated family business taking care of upstate New York chimneys since 1979. Steve (the Dad), Caleb (Son #1), and Matt (Son #2) are all CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps and members of the National Chimney Sweep Guild. We offer a complete range of products and services to keep your chimney running safely and effectively.

"Our chimney presented a challenging situation for a liner solution. In fact, we had a different contractor give up on installation of a liner for our chimney after multiple days of effort. Top Hat Chimney expertise is excellent and their logical and persistent approach resulted in the best technical solution. They also worked to minimize cost within the constraints we faced. They conducted themselves professionally and kept things clean inside and outside the house. Being summer time, we haven't had a fire as of yet but based upon the high quality workmanship, don't anticipate any issues. We give them top marks and highly recommend them."

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

It is possible to wash your own roof, but we don’t recommend it. First, getting up on any roof is dangerous without proper safety equipment, especially if wetting a metal roof and making the surface slick. Additionally, it’s easy to damage your roof or force water between roof seams if you use a power washer, which can lead to property damage. Hiring a professional roof cleaner will save you time, keep you safe, and ensure that your roof looks new again without damaging it in the process. Plus, roof cleaning is a relatively affordable home improvement project.

Clean the outside of your home at least once a year. If you live in an area with salty sea air, high levels of pollen, or an abundance of leaves in the fall, it's helpful to wash it at least two times a year. Frequent cleanings will allow you to remove debris and pests before they flourish into infestations, or cause mold and mildew.

The cost depends on roof size, pitch, accessibility, and contamination extent. A steep roof or extensive moss growth may raise the price.

Iron, or ferrous sulfate, is one of the fastest methods for killing moss. As such, you’ll find this ingredient in many lawn fertilizers and lawn killers. Vinegar is another solution for quickly killing moss. It takes just 15 to 20 minutes for vinegar to take effect. A harsher method is bleach, which also has a similar time frame for taking effect.

On average, cleaning a roof will take between two to five hours. This timeline depends on the size and slope of your roof and the severity of any stains. Cleaning roof stains can take additional time, especially if there are signs of moss or algae.

In addition, the age of your roof makes an enormous difference in the time it takes to clean it, as older roofs need more gentle care. If you have significant landscaping in your yard by your house, your professional roof cleaner will need additional time to protect it from cleaning chemicals.
