"Joe Woods and Just Right Carpentry did a superb job building our new deck. They were responsive, kind, and easy to work with. In addition to building a beautiful deck at a reasonable price, they left everything neat and clean after they left. They went above and beyond and I will certainly use their services again."

"Wonderful experience. Carlos is a fantastic carpenter and craftsman. I drew a sketch for my client and sent it to him. He immediately brought it to life. We had some delays due to the builder not being finished when planned. They were understanding and patient with the install. I am beyond impressed, and my clients are thrilled with the finished built ins. 10 out of 10 superior craftsmanship, and he’s a really nice man also!"

"Ivan and his crew were friendly, professional, and always on time. The work was completed to a high quality. I am so glad to have found this multi-talented handyman. The first job was to install new curtain rods and rehang curtains—perfect! Next, power washing entire house, windows, gates, painting exterior doors all the jobs on my summer wish list completed to perfection at a reasonable cost with a sunny bright smile and positive energy that lifts the spirit. Thank you Ivan—looking forward to working again with you again when the need arises!"

"Mr. Handyman arrived promptly and got right to work. He accomplished the task in the time had indicated and cleaned up the area. We have been using the exercise machine for a few weeks now and everything is fine. We were pleased with his work."

"Mack Rubio and his team are awesome. My front porch was beginning to sag on one corner and it was causing my vinyl siding to bow out. My home also needed to be pressure washed. Mack is very knowledgeable and he got his level out and showed me that the left side of my porch was two inches lower than the right side. I knew my left column was rotting but I was not sure about the wooden supports I could not see beneath the decking boards. Mack assessed the situation and advised pouring concrete footers and replacing only the columns and supports that needed to be replaced on the porch. His quote was very reasonable and I didn't hesitate to give Handymack Services the work. Mack and his team were on time, got right to work, and I was truly amazed at all that got accomplished while I was at work. When I got home, Mack took the time to explain what remained to be done and his schedule for finishing the project. Mack's work is quality and he stated more than once that he wanted to make sure I was happy. Honestly, I am way beyond happy because I have never contracted with anyone who has been as thorough, nor who worked as quickly as Mack. My porch looks great, my siding is no longer bowed out, and the pressure washing made my twelve year old siding look new. I was so impressed I immediately hired him to repair a door frame, stain my back deck, and replace warped deck boards. I will definitely be giving Handymack Services my business in the future because they value me as a customer and I value their honesty, promptness, and attention to detail."

"If I could give 10 stars I would. Jose and his crew showed up every day, on time…even working Saturdays AND a holiday! I am beyond thrilled with the results of our remodel. Jose was professional, fair and meticulous with his work. He went above and beyond in so many aspects, and gave excellent expert advice. Any time I EVER need anything done again, I will be calling Jose and Alta Renovations!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
