"Last week my 30 year old AC compressor unit decided it was tired of spinning the fan around and shot it into the wire cover. Fearing the worst I called Sarah at A&R mechanical. This is the height of AC season and she told me I couldn't expect to get a new unit before September but she would send someone by as soon as she could. Allan arrived the next day, assessed the damage and said he would see what he could do. I got a call from Sarah later that day letting me know she found parts in another state and would get them in a few days. The parts showed up this morning and Allan and Sean were here in an hour. I've used A&R before as have a few of my friends. They are trustworthy, fair and when the unit finally kicks I will have them replace it!"

Air Duct Cleaning questions, answered by experts

To clean an HVAC fresh air intake, start by going outside and figuring out where the intake is located on your home. Then, take a wire brush, rag, or wet/dry vacuum cleaner and use it to remove the built-up dirt and debris that’s accumulated on the external part of the intake.

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.

For most homes, the common causes of poor airflow in a duct system are blockages, typically from dust, debris, or buildup. Other factors include leaky or disconnected ducts, improper duct sizing, and clogged air filters. These issues restrict airflow, reducing HVAC efficiency.

Forced air systems should be inspected and maintained by a professional every year. A forced air technician will check the furnace, ductwork, and other key parts of the system to ensure it is operating efficiently and safely. Properly maintaining the system can reduce health risks and prolong its lifespan for years to come.

According to HomeAdvisor, cleaning AC coils costs most people $100 to $400. Cleaning costs less when you wrap it into your annual service visit or have your coils cleaned at the same time as your ducts. Duct cleaning, a service that includes cleaning the evaporator coil located in your indoor unit, costs $250 to $500.
