"It all started out well after purchase of the initial Angie's list deal.  We promptly agreed on a date and a gentlemen came to measure and start the paperwork. Install date was set for 11/5/15. On 11/4, I was called about setting an install date.  My response was I already had one for the next day. Long story short, the company did not bother to tell me they had cancelled my appointment, they just acted like I never had one.  It was as though one side of the business did not know what the other side was doing. Since I made arrangements to be home on the 5th, I was not happy.  We finally settled on the 12th and the installation went smoothly enough.  However after completion, I noticed the installers had broken a piece of moulding in front of the patio door.  I know they realized they cracked it because they used clear caulk as a fix. I called the company and they said they would replace.  As of 11/30, the moulding still has not been replaced even though I was told the installer was picking up molding on 11/17.
I will say the person who came to measure and the lady who did the follow-up calling were professional. However, I can't say the same for the install side. The contact person was nice enough but he did not contact me to say the install was cancelled and to me it's taking way too long to replace the molding the installers broke.  I view it as a lack of integrity to cover up breaking the piece and not bothering to say anything to me.  The patio door is beautiful and I had planned to purchase a front door from them but have changed my mind.

"Overall, I'm pleased with this experience, with two exceptions (missing part and too much silicone). They replaced the original patio door in the master bedroom with a new, more energy efficient door. The installation went very well, and was quite challenging for the installers. The bedroom is on the top floor of a narrow townhouse, so the door had to be creatively lifted up to the bedroom from the main floor deck, and then pulled over the top deck into the bedroom. It was quite an impressive feat! The door was nicely installed and framed, and the end result is very nice. I am very pleased with the quality and finishes on the door itself.
However, there were two small glitches. The first one is a missing lock mechanism and the second one is the excessive use of silicone around the new framing on the door. One of the primary reasons I purchased this particular door was a unique secondary locking mechanism that allows the door to be locked while slightly ajar. They forgot this mechanism; this oversight failed several QC steps, and I'm actually the one who asked the installer about it during the final inspection. The installer told me this was an easy fix, that this part was in stock, and would be quickly and easily fixed in about five minutes. This is not the case. It took me several phone calls to find someone who would follow up on this for me. I was just informed that it will be installed on Jan. 3, 2012 which is a month after the initial installation; this is disappointing given that this was their mistake. It would have been good customer service to rectify this error quickly. Also, I planned to paint the room immediately after the door was installed, and keep the door securely ajar to vent the paint vapors. So I just painted the room, and left the door unsecurely open. The other thing is the amount of silicone used around the outside edges of the wood frame; so much was used that I can't paint paint this frame or the wall close to the frame because the silicone extends onto the wood and the wall in a few places. While I appreciate the energy efficiency of this excessive use of silicone, I would have liked to have been able to paint the new framing and the wall up to the edge of the framing.
Overall, the new patio door is very nice. Once I get the new lock installed, I'll be happier.

Door Repair questions, answered by experts

Butterfly hinges are one of the most common types of hinges and you can use them all over your home. Though they’re common on doors, cabinets, and shutters, you can even find them on decor, like jewelry boxes, music boxes, and trunks. Doors may have basic butterfly hinges, while the hinges on cabinets and decor may be more ornate.

You can convert a pre-hung door into a Dutch door, but it’s more of a pain. Pre-hung doors are already set in the frame with the hinges and everything aligned, so once you cut the slab in half, you’ll likely need to adjust the hinge placement and maybe even mess with the frame itself. It’s doable, but expect some trial and error because it’s not a straight-swap situation.

Plenty of building codes dictate what you must install in your home, but door sweeps are optional. However, they're a low-cost addition with many advantages. So, installing a sweep on all your exterior doors is in your best interest. You'll save money in the long run and stay more comfortable year-round.

To maintain a door and prevent future issues, regularly clean it, check and lubricate the hinges and locks, inspect the hardware, and check the weatherstripping for signs of wear to prolong its lifespan and functionality.

Yes, barn doors can be too heavy, although the limitation is usually imposed by the mounting hardware you buy and not your home’s framing, unless you’re building an unusually wide door. To keep the weight down, you can opt for 1-by material rather than 2-by material, and choose a softwood like pine rather than a hardwood like maple or oak. Check the weight limits on your mounting hardware, and always attach your door track to studs rather than to drywall anchors.
