"Gary returned to paint our house after suspending the job until we had rotten cedar shakes replaced. He went out of his way to get us on this year's schedule. He and his assistant took their time, prepped all surfaces properly and did a fabulous job with the painting. He replaced the few shakes the construction company missed and also replaced some trim that was compromised. The finished result is seamlessly. His attention to detail is outstanding. I definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a painter."

"In 45 years of home ownership Peter and his crew, Tommy and Jimmy, were the best contractors I have ever hired. They painted my trim, doors, walls, dining room chairs, buffet, repaired walls and a ceiling, removed wallpaper and last, but definitely not least painted my kitchen cabinets, which look better than new. They are trustworthy, their work ethic is exceptional and their organization and clean up is beyond what I anticipated. And punctuality….when is the last time a contractor called you to say they were going to be three or five minutes late because they were stuck behind a school bus? They certainly went above and beyond in everything they did. Their work is impeccable. I would recommend them without hesitation. As a side note, I had decided to strip my front door, which had layer upon layer of paint on it. I texted Peter with questions throughout the process, and he never hesitated to answer."

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

It’s possible to hang your own wallpaper, but the process is tedious and potentially frustrating, and it can be challenging to get seams to line up and look clean and professional. Plus, depending on the type of wallpaper you’re installing, using too much or too little adhesive could cause damage to your drywall or plaster, peeling, and bubbling in the final product. It’s usually a better idea to hire a professional wallpaper installer to do the work for you, as the relatively low cost is justifiable, if only to avoid damage to your walls.

Spring and fall are the best seasons to apply wallpaper because excessively hot or cold temperatures can cause issues with the paste used to attach the paper to the wall. A professional wallpaper hanger can help you decide if your home is too hot, cold, humid, or dry for the wallpaper to stick properly.

In most cases, it is not recommended to wallpaper over existing wallpaper, as the success depends on the type of paper already on the wall. While you might be able to cover non-coated wallpaper, you should never apply new wallpaper over a vinyl-coated one, which is more common. Doing so can lead to poor adhesion, resulting in bubbles, imperfections, and peeling. It can also trap moisture, potentially causing hazardous mold growth between the layers.

Even if the existing wallpaper is suitable, experts recommend applying only one new layer. Adding multiple layers (more than two total) can cause significant adhesion problems, leading to warping and bubbling. For the best results, the recommended approach is to remove the old wallpaper and all paste residue before hanging the new paper. If you are unsure about your wallpaper type, consider consulting a professional.

No, you don’t need to apply paint primer to your wall before hanging paintable wallpaper. Manufacturers design paintable wallpaper so that the paint will adhere effectively, so primer isn’t necessary. Plus, even if you opt for a light shade of paint, you won’t have to worry about the shade underneath showing through because you are painting on a light, white surface.

One of the biggest downsides to peel-and-stick wallpaper is that it doesn't last as long as traditional wallpaper. Its lifespan depends on several factors, including the quality of the paper, proper wall preparation and application, and the room's conditions. As a general rule, peel-and-stick wallpaper can last for at least five years, but this can vary significantly. Budget products may only last about 3 years, while higher-quality products can stay up for 7 years or more in ideal conditions. Factors that can shorten its lifespan include high humidity (such as in a bathroom), dirty walls, and low-quality paper. If used on flooring, expect it to last only 1 to 3 years unless sealed. However, the shorter lifespan can be seen as a positive, making it a great choice for people who enjoy switching up their interiors more frequently.
