"So incredibly happy with my new driveway. Couldn’t say enough good things about Erin and George and their company. From being responsive to every communication, to being on time and super thorough throughout the process and professional, and the work was perfection. They ripped out my old broken driveway (see pictures) and extended my driveway and put in a pad for my garbage cans. Beautiful job!"

"Just that he was very thorough, he was able to describe some of the technology and so of how, we live near the coast of were the lake and the water table high so lot of these basement have this moisture level were like upward like forty percent. He was really really scientific and I guess that's what impress me the most and then he didn't give me any kind of hard sell he was just putting the data out there."

"We have used TruDirt on 4 projects, including clearing, stone driveway construction, lawn reconstruction, storm drainage and subdrainage work. In all cases, they gave us quick, clear quotes, showed up and finished on time. When completed, they always clean up the sites nicely. The pricing was also very fair for each job. We are completely happy with TruDirt's work and would recommend them to anyone."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

Regular cleaning, sealing, and timely repair of cracks help maintain its condition.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues.

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.
