"Amazing. He was here several times, always arrived on time with all materials. Before every job the pricing was discussed and I paid exactly what was agreed upon with no surprises. The electrician was kind, considerate and caring and explained everything to me. He made suggestions and took the time to help me understand everything. I learnt this is a family business and being a small business owner myself It was such a pleasure to have him here. So many companies today you get no personalized attention. He was always reachable by email or phone. I would highly recommend him and will continue to use him."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

It’s not recommended to turn off your breaker box in hopes of saving electricity. Breaker boxes were not designed to constantly be switched on and off. Therefore, turning off breakers unnecessarily can cause costly damage that outnumbers any energy savings. Only flip your breakers if absolutely necessary when troubleshooting an electrical issue.

In many cases, yes, upgrading your electrical panel can lower your electric bill. Upgrading an outdated electrical panel can make your home more energy-efficient, so you consume less electricity and spend less on utility bills. However, to see these savings, you’ll need to invest quite a bit. On average, installing a new electrical panel costs $1,200 to $2,000, with most people paying around $1,600.

The most common type of electrical outlet is a 3-prong outlet, which has two flat blades (one is wider than the other) and a round grounding pin. Older homes typically have 2-prong outlets that aren’t as safe as more modern options and are generally not up to current electrical codes.  Other outlets you can find in your home include 20A, 125 volt varieties for larger appliances like refrigerators or washing machines.

There are also GFCI outlets, which protect against electrical shock in wet areas, such as bathrooms and kitchens, and arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) outlets, which protect against electrical fires caused by arcing.

Yes, GFCI breakers are required for all outdoor outlets. This code requirement applies to all outlets located on balconies, decks, patios, and other outdoor lounge spaces. In addition, outdoor outlets need to have watertight covers that provide protection when cords are plugged in. If you have an older home that may not be up to code, it's a good idea to also ask your electrician about adding GFCIs to some indoor areas. Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and any other areas of a home that are commonly exposed to moisture should have GCFI breakers.

Yes, electric-start snow blowers need to be plugged in to start, but you can unplug them and go once they’re up and running. Simply plug the snow blower into an outdoor outlet and press the start button. Once it starts, you can unplug it and use it freely. The idea for these types of snow blowers is to simplify the starting process from the typical pull-string starts.
