"The team did a great job on some very old plaster walls. They were professional, quiet and kept to their word on schedule. The plaster repairs and painting were great - we will be using them again and I would recommend them to others as well."

"This was a very involved plaster repair and remediation job, in a very old house. Grady is the only person (or company) who was willing to take on the job and drive all the way from Pennsylvania to our home in Northern Virginia. There are very few people who do this kind of work anymore (we really searched) and he is an expert in his field. We needed to work around his schedule, because he is in demand in the tri-state area, so it took awhile to schedule the work to begin... but it was worth it."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Schedule a lead paint test before planning any other steps. Plan your plaster repair for late spring or early fall, as moderate Bronx temperatures ensure proper curing. Check city databases for open permits or existing violations on your property. If you share walls in an attached rowhouse, notify your neighbors early. Arrange temporary relocation for your family if lead hazards exist.

Helpful?

Hire licensed contractors with specific experience handling historic, three-coat lime walls. Because the Bronx features older housing, professionals must possess federal lead-safe certifications to protect your household. Ask for local references from similar rowhouses or pre-war apartments. If your property sits in a historic district, verify that the professional understands local preservation rules before starting your plaster repair.

Helpful?

Combine plaster repair with electrical upgrades or window replacements to maximize efficiency. Upgrading old knob-and-tube wiring requires opening walls, making it the perfect time to fix the surfaces simultaneously. Coordinate interior work with exterior brick repointing to stop moisture damage completely. Bundling these tasks in your NY home prevents you from opening and patching the same walls twice.

Helpful?

Inspect your walls between March and April. Winter temperature swings in the Bronx cause moisture to freeze and expand, cracking older walls. Check for peeling near steam radiators or soft spots from roof leaks. If you live in a pre-war building, widespread bulging means the original material is failing. Schedule plaster repair immediately if you spot active water damage or hollow-sounding sections.

Helpful?

Skipping lead paint testing in pre-1978 NY homes poses severe health hazards. Always test before disturbing old walls. Another major error is performing plaster repair without fixing the underlying roof or window leak first. Avoid using modern patching compounds on historic lime walls, which causes peeling. Finally, doing DIY work during winter without climate control forces the material to dry unevenly.
