"Creekside Power is outstanding for electrical work!! The attention to detail put into their work when installing my Generac home standby generator was first class. I am pretty OCD about the way things are done, and Shawn s work was definitely up to my standards. I would highly recommend Creekside Power their price was my second lowest out of 14 estimates... Shawn was only $125 higher than my lowest estimate... and that person was not trained & certified to install Generac products, nor was he a Generac dealer like Shawn... that made my decision very easy. Everything was completed in a neat and orderly fashion. Shawn was very patient throughout, taking the time to answer my frequent questions. He used a level throughout the install and took his time as a result, everything lines up and matches up with my existing breaker box, etc. Shawn was very careful, diligent, and a bit OCD about how straight everything was during our install, which I thought was great!! Shawn takes pride in his work and it shows! Call Shawn for a free estimate... Shawn knows his stuff and you will like him. He did a great job for us on two jobs - a backup/standby generator install and a replacement of my meter channel!! He also ran a new electrical line to an out-building at my mom's house. I have already recommended Shawn to anyone I know who mentions wanting to get a generator installed."

"Pleasure to work with on recessed lighting install. Ken was responsive to questions and time changes via email/phone. We removed the old lighting, did some of the recessed lighting layout, and obtained the materials (he reviewed to make sure it was OK). His installation and electrical work was handled professionally and on schedule. Any adjustments were reviewed with me as a courtesy. We thought the price was fair for the work done. Nice job."

"Owner Chris W. came out for the free quote; he listened carefully to our needs to determine costs. James and Chris (not the owner) were prompt, professional, and kept us advised throughout the install process of our two bathroom fans. They also did some wiring upgrades downstairs in quick fashion. We would highly recommend Empire and anticipate using them again. Very good value for the cost."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Generators are safe to use as long as they are installed and operated correctly according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The most critical safety tips are to never use a portable or fuel-powered generator inside an enclosed space due to the risk of lethal carbon monoxide poisoning; always operate it outdoors where fumes can dissipate away from your home. Additionally, never attempt to connect a generator to your home’s electrical panel yourself—hire a professional to ensure the setup meets safety standards. Finally, avoid overloading the generator by not connecting more appliances than it is rated for, as this can damage your equipment or cause a fire.

An undersized whole-house generator has the potential to overheat and shut down when you try to run a central AC system. This scenario can not only damage the whole-house generator, but can also trip your home’s breakers or cause electrical damage. To avoid this situation, hire a local generator installer to correctly size your whole-house generator.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

As a safety measure, you should always turn off the main breaker while operating your generator’s backup breaker. In addition, you should also switch off all appliance breakers so you don't have a power surge when the main breaker turns back on. And finally, turning off the main breaker prevents back-feeding, which endangers utility workers with the risk of electrocution. Back-feeding could also destroy the electrical circuits of your neighbors if they use the same power network.

While diesel is relatively stable, it won’t last nearly as long as propane and you may have to replace it if it sits unused for too long. Diesel can sometimes struggle to work efficiently or start engines during especially cold weather, so it’s not the best choice for every climate. Compared to fuels like propane and natural gas, diesel generators tend to be noisier and create more exhaust, which isn’t always ideal for home use.
