"they did a very thorough job, power washed, sanded and 2 coats of deck stain/paint on our town home front and back decks. I have used Palette Pro before for floor refinishing and painting indoors. Their customer service is excellent and I think their pricing for our neighborhood is reasonable given the quality of work performed. I would use them again."

"Matt and his team painted our entire house, and we are so pleased with the results. Some of our rooms use very dark colors, and we have a good amount of complex moldings, so we needed (and got!) a very skilled painter. We chose to use Farrow & Ball paint, and between that and the summer humidity, it took a couple of weeks longer than planned. He was great about communicating with us about the finish date when it became apparent that there would be a delay, and was happy to schedule around other work we had planned on the house. Matt and his team were precise and careful with our floors and belongings. He is also professional and just plain nice. Would definitely use him again!"

"We had our exterior of our house painted and the deck stained. Jay took the time to explain the whole process and answered all of our questions (and we had a lot of questions!). The detailed quote outlining all of the work to be done was excellent and helped us understand what exactly was going to be done. It is clear he takes pride in the work that he and his teams do. There was open communication throughout the process and the job was very well done. Jay, Jose, and the crew were professional and the results of the job clearly demonstrates that."

Customers say: Quick response

"First I was planning to power-wash and stain the deck, but Orlando talked me into power-wash the whole house and paint as well. The price was reasonable. Even though the work was postponed due to the rain, Orlando called and emailed constantly to give me their schedule. They exchanged the top part of the deck and repaired here and there, and I find their carpentry skills are excellent. I definitely will ask him to do something around the house in the future."

"Esteban Vazquez the owner of Taurus Painting is extremely courteous, hard working and efficient. I have lived in the CT area for 13 yrs and have had my house painted 3 X and never have i had such a fantastic job! Esteban went beyond just painting in fixing rotten wood etc. He started when he said he would, worked from 8-5 everyday and finished when EVERYTHING was painted (actually stained) His entire crew was polite and hard working. If I could have rated him a 10, I would have! Taurus Painting deserves an A++++++"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

Wet-sanding and dry-sanding each have pros and cons. Dry-sanding is less messy, so it’s a good option if you’re trying to minimize dust (for example, if you’re sanding an occupied home or working with particularly dry or dusty drywall mud). However, dry-sanding is quicker because you don’t have to keep rinsing a sponge or wait for it to dry before painting.

Whether you can paint over your existing paint depends on what’s on there. Most of the time, you’ll want to sand down or scrape off the paint that’s currently coating your surface. Epoxy paint, for example, won’t let new paint stick to the surface. Latex paint is more forgiving and will accept a new coat, but a primer is recommended if you’re switching colors.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.
