Another common cause is using too much polish or wax, which can leave a sticky residue, especially after cleaning. If excess product is the culprit, you can remove the buildup with a cloth dampened with warm water and a little dish soap. Afterward, you can reapply a small amount of polish or wax, making sure to wipe away any excess. However, if cleaning doesn't help, the stickiness may be a sign that the furniture's finish is failing. As varnish and lacquer age, they can degrade and become tacky. In this case, the furniture will need to be refinished to resolve the issue.

If you recently splashed paint on the wrong area of a wooden object, remove it with a solvent or caustic paint stripper. Some paint that has yet to dry may be removable by hand with coarse sandpaper or a plastic scraper. Another trick for removing dried-on paint is rubbing a dab of nail polish remover on the paint to remove it, but avoid touching the bare wood surface.

Depending on the piece, there are times when you can paint over painted furniture. Start by applying a high-adhesion primer so that the new topcoat will stick. However, if the paint is peeling or chipping, it’s best to sand it down, use a paint stripper, or try a deglosser to ensure your new paint will adhere.

Chalk paint can be applied without sanding first. Keep in mind that while there are a lot of chalk paint color options available, there aren’t as many choices as latex or oil-based paint.

You can also learn how to paint furniture without sanding using a liquid deglosser, sometimes referred to as liquid sandpaper. This can remove any old paint, gloss, or varnish, without the need to manually sand. Apply the deglosser using a cloth, then wait for the chemical to penetrate through the surface. Once it soaks through, you should be able to wipe away the residue with a towel. 

Wood furniture is usually vulnerable to water damage. However, larger furniture tends to have a high chance of being salvaged as long as it hasn’t been standing in water for more than 24 hours. You can restore bedpoles, table and couch legs, and other wood parts that haven’t been fully saturated. Meanwhile, smaller objects like decors or furniture with fabric wrapping may require full replacement.
