"I pay $75 annually for a certain amount of appliances to be covered. What we didn't know is that you still have to pay a service call fee and if the technician deems the appliance still functional they will not fix it and if the technician says there is nothing wrong with the appliance, they will not fix it. In other words, the appliance has to be completely broken in order for them to fix it."

Appliance Sales questions, answered by experts

DIY is possible for small items. Professional services handle heavy lifting, proper disposal, and recycling.

It depends on the specifics of your warranty. The motor is likely not covered if you’re working with a limited warranty. The same goes for other components like the compressor and evaporator coil. Some extended warranties will cover the blower and fan motor, so read the fine print before signing up. Additionally, the manufacturer may offer a warranty for the parts, including the motor, though there’s likely to be a strict time limit for this coverage.

Deciding whether to repair or replace a small appliance depends on its quality, age, and the cost of the repair. It is often more affordable to repair them, with an average repair cost of $150 versus a replacement cost of around $300. If you have a high-quality or top-of-the-line small appliance, it is almost always more cost-effective to repair it. However, a common guideline is to lean toward replacement if the repair cost is more than half the price of a new one. If the appliance is already nearing the end of its useful life, replacement might be the better long-term choice. A professional appliance technician can help you decide by estimating the appliance's remaining lifespan after the repair.

Generally speaking, you should use the self-clean function about once a year. Because of the high temperatures during the self-clean cycle, using it too often is one of the common mistakes that’ll break your oven.

Cover appliances, clean surfaces regularly, and winterize plumbing before freezing temperatures.
