"Ralph showed up on time, every time. When he came over to give the estimate, he also removed all the tub trim and hardware so I could go buy replacement parts. The first day of the work, he sanded and removed all the old mineral deposits, fixed a chip, and reglazed the old tub.  The next day he came back and installed the new tub fittings I had purchased.  It is like an entirely new bathroom!  A flawless job, done very well. Yes, the new finish was quite smelly (sort of like spray paint or nail polish) at first, but in a few hours as it dried, the smell subsided.Had I known I could have a new bathroom for such a low price, I would have hired Ralph years ago. I will definitely use him next time I have a similar project. He was professional, friendly, helpful, knowledgable, and just fun to have around!"

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on material quality, labor rates, and additional features like integrated backsplashes.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface materials can be cut with standard woodworking tools, such as a circular saw or a jigsaw. However, it is crucial to use the correct type of blade to avoid damaging the material.

For a circular saw, a tungsten carbide-tipped blade is required; a triple chip grind blade is highly recommended. For a jigsaw, you should use a fine-tooth down-cutting blade. Do not use blades designed for cutting wood, as they can cause microfractures that weaken the edges of the countertop. A diamond blade is also unnecessary, as those are designed for harder materials like natural stone, which Corian is not.

After cutting, the edge will be rough. It is essential to sand and smooth the cut edge to prevent microfractures, which can eventually compromise the integrity of the countertop.

Marble countertops cost $3,000 on average, ranging from about $2,000 to $5,000, depending on the type of marble, square footage, location, and whether you use tiles or slabs. Another major cost factor to consider is the grading of the marble, which determines its quality level.

Use this grading system when selecting marble for countertops:

  • Grade A: Nearly perfect with subtle veining

  • Grade B: Minor flaws such as pits, fissures, or blotches

  • Grade C: Minor and major flaws like chipping and cracks requiring repair

  • Grade D: Significant damage needing repair, with dark veining and pronounced colors

No, you should not put hot pots or pans directly on epoxy countertops, as this can cause permanent damage. While epoxy is heat-resistant, it is not fully heatproof. Epoxy countertops can typically withstand temperatures ranging from 135°F to 300°F, but cookware directly from a stove or oven can reach much higher temperatures (300°F to 500°F). Placing an extremely hot item on the surface can cause it to melt, soften, or discolor. To protect the integrity and appearance of your countertops, always use a trivet, hot pad, pot holder, or other heat-resistant barrier before setting down hot cookware.

With proper maintenance, concrete countertops can last for decades, with a life expectancy of 50 years or more. At a minimum, they should last 20 years before major issues arise. Their longevity depends on the quality of materials, proper installation, and consistent care. Because concrete is porous, it is prone to cracking and staining. Regular maintenance, including resealing, waxing, and repairing any chips or cracks, is essential to preserve its lifespan.
