"I own my Mom's house in Forked River and it had a roof leak on the back patio. My mom had passed away a few days ago and I live in Tennessee. I had to get someone to repair the roof. Ernie called me back promptly and went out the same day to look at what needed to be repaired. He gave me a fair estimate and took my credit card info over the phone. He sent me pictures of the damage and all the repair work as it progressed. He did a professional job in a timely manner that saved me extensive damage to my Mom's house. I would recommend him to anyone needing quick responsive service for roof repair."

"We originally reached out to Home Techs to do repairs resulting from a flood. Joe got back to us right away and came out to view the damage within a few days. We expanded the original job to include replacing the floors throughout the downstairs, putting in a new bathroom, installing a new water heater, rebuilding a closet, fixing our heater/circuit board and replacing the thermostats. Joe kept us updated throughout the process. He was respectful and kind and did everything he could to keep us within our budget. We then hired him to do the roof. Thereâ s nothing he and his team canâ t do. It was a great experience and we heartily recommend Home Techs for all your home needs."

"Santo is a real asset! Extremely talented and respectful. I'm very happy to have him fixing my home. He devised a handicap railing to assist my 88 yr old mom. He also put in a gorgeous laminate floor. I excited to get more work done!"

Small jobs welcome

"It was wondrrful doing business with Jackson and his company. He did a great job powerwashing our driveway and patio. Not only did he do a really good job powerwashing everything, but there was no stress working with him! He came on time to give us an estimate. He was here when he said to actually do the work abd when we realized we needed some additional work done, he took care of that in a timely manner too. Definitely holding on to his card for the future and would recommend him to anyone!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Composite decking requires a solid foundation or substructure for support. This base is typically a frame composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame can be built from various materials, such as composite, plastic, timber, or metal, depending on your budget, deck type, and environmental conditions. For maximum stability, a professional deck builder may recommend installing this frame on top of a solid concrete base. It is best to discuss the most suitable substructure design and materials for your specific project with a professional.

A covered deck can be a good investment that increases your home value—especially if you live in a hot region with a lot of sun. A covering over the deck means you can get more use out of it, even on the hottest summer days. With a permanent deck covering, you can even add ceiling fans to help cool down your deck for added comfort.

Deck boards should be spaced no more than three-eighths of an inch apart. This is enough space to allow water and small debris to pass through without collecting on the surface, but not enough to create a tripping hazard. Certain materials, like pressure-treated wood, shrink over time, so they may need less space at installation.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.
